Damien, I didn’t for a minute think VX927 or AE Ldr were members of Planetalk. Neither was I aiming my comments towards you specifically, this was a general observation. I have nothing directly against yourself or any of the other members of Planetalk. Feel free to PM me if you wish to discuss further. 🙂

    Steve,

While I think you are right, in my opinion the situation has been alot worse in the past. To me this all began when a group of like minded individuals became good friends on this forum, so good in fact that they decided they were the forum. When one of there number became upset and left, so did the rest and they formed their own forum. To there probable suprise the forum continued and some have gradually drifted back but others only seem to appear to stir things up and try and tempt people over to their side. I dont neccesarily have a problem with this as we all have our own views but sometimes it is cringeworthy to watch. Once you get past that I think the forum is getting better again.

The point is, the aircarft belonged TO HIM! Why should we be so grateful to him for looking after his own property? I’m still not having a go at David, I am simply questioning his need to start charging for his hangar, when he patently hasn’t needed to do so for the past 13 years!
    AE Ldr

If he hadn’t looked after his own property it wouldn’t be here now. I could also be wrong but I believe the area around the Vulcan was used for the storage of cars etc before all the work started so I don’t think he was suriving without rent. At the end of the day bills need to be paid and just because someone has a business it doesn’t mean they can suddenly afford to give away hundreds of thousands of pounds, people who do tend to be either very, very wealthy or ex-business men quite quickly.

In an ideal world the VTTS campaign would have brought the aircraft straight from the RAF, flown it to Scampton were the RAF would have given them a hanger rent free (ideal world remember, not realilty). This then would have saved them some cash and given them an airfield to operate from that has proper ATC and a full time fire crew. We however have the situation we have now.

Can anyone confirm to me what Mr Walton’s part of the VTTS campaign is? I mean did he buy the aircraft just to run up and down the runway at Bruntingthorpe and then the VTTS people came along and tried to hijack his aircraft or was he part of the inital start-up discussions?

I had hoped that you would have taken my comments in the spirit in which they were made. Clearly you have not, and most of you seem to regard any questions as personal attacks on those being questioned. I think you are wrong.
    AE Ldr

To an extent with this I agree but was not calling one of our members a ‘utter fool’ and suggesting he had ‘half a brain cell’ not a personnel attack? If you felt that strongly about something that someone has said why not PM them and talk through things in a civil manner, at the moment you are doing yourself no favours.

Surely balls are round by definition?

Rugby – Played by hooligans watched by gentlemen.
Football – Played by gentlemen (well it was) watched by hooligans

Guess that makes me a watching hooligan then……

By the way what makes a national collection?

Owned / Funded / Run / Supported by the goverment or the ‘nation’

Actually should I have said 5 – FAAM

Everyone has their own view on this, but here’s mine.

    1. We should accept that the reason we buy most aircraft is because we like them not because there so histroically important the country couldn’t go on without them. There no different to classic cars, bikes, trains etc.

    2. Most of the really historic aircraft in this country could fit in probably 2 large museums.

    3. We have 4 national collections that I can think of, IWM,RAFM, Science Museum and Museum of Flight. That should be enough.

    4. If one of the national collections does not have the space or manpower to keep an aircraft that it feels should be part of the collection then a museum with the facillites and labour should be found (if available) and funding allocated.

    5. For a museum to survive it must appeal to the general public. If they are being asked to part with there cash they are going to expect to be entertained as well as educated. A collection of your favourite aviation artifacts is unlikely to do this.

    6. Always offer a warm welcome to new prospective volunteers and go out of your way to get them involved. Asking them on there first day if they’ll mind the shop while everyone else goes and ‘plays’ with an airframe or goes down the pub for lunch is not going to encourage them to come back!

    7. If you have an airframe that could be up for disposal (even if it’s in the long term) then let people know. It will give them time to get a formulated plan together, then invite them down to help with any work involved and to get familiar with the aircraft.

    8. We cant preserve everything! We’d run out of room!

    9. Don’t blame the goverment for everything, they don’t have bottomless pits of money and just because they wont keep you’re favourite aircraft flying and doing circuits above you’re house doesn’t mean there wrong. However when somebody does something really obviously stupid at one of the national collections (like selling P1B XA847 😡 ) then use them to put pressure on that department.

    10. I’m sure there are plenty of people around who cant make a solid commitment to one group or museum (I’m one) due to various reasons. These people could however be available on odd days when you need alot of manpower (not neccesarily aviation related). If somebody wanted to start a website that was broken down into regions were we could put our names forward so we could be contacted should anybody have such a requirement then I would be up for that.

    11. Have Fun!

Added to this try and avoid the situation were people become friends that form into groups, that become packs, that start hunting after the other packs at your group/society/museum, which then cause breakaway groups – it doesn’t help.

    P.S. Listen to Bruce he’s a wise man…. 😀

Looks interesting, shame to lose a Dak though – lovely aircraft.

Slightly of topic but has anybody heard any rumours/info on her former partner in crime G-DAKK? Last I heard she was at Lee-on-Solent, but is she still run-up at all, cared for etc? Theres an old link of the ‘Fifi Kate’ weblog advertising her for sale at £150,000 but it seems very out of date and all the maintenance dates have now passed.
