I believe that parts of the airfield are inhabited by travellers

Could use them for target practice with a dirty bomb full of manure.!!

I really wish there was more there to exite me as this place is just up the road, The airshows were at times very boring and slow compared to others.

But to be fair i have not been here for some 4 years and it’s worth a good look to many and myself again.

So with that maybe next year i’ll pop up.:p

If there’s a few within the area why not hire a mini bus and split costs?

Or Train travel but this may be a little expensive for many.

Are you asking about one particular Merlin or who still makes parts and/or overhauls them today?

On the topic of making new Merlins, this would help:

Yes who overhauls them today any links you may have will be great. Thanks pp.

Who is the engine builders of the Merlin?

What is there shelf life before one is to be stripped and new seals fitted etc?

It’s more interesting than threads on xmas gifts and a lift to legends, that’s for sure!
That Tadcaster GSFS posted by WG-13 looks great, someone must obviously be taking care of it.

There’s a bit more to it than that. Both the UK & the US have pissed away their engineering base. Not only do they no longer train people to do this stuff.. but they exported most of the machinery to India & China etc… & the people who DO know how to do this stuff are dying of old age.:(
It’s getting near the point of no return.

Spot on!! I have been saying this for years in another industry but it fits many.

Now if India build a “copy” v12 based on the merlins power plant would you want this in your spits/p-51’s? I doubt it you would want original but in a few years to come re manufacture of brand new engines to the same spec may have to come in the old units will get to a point when there no longer available to be re worked. ie throws a rod or three.

Ah – an ideal world scenario! Not seen too many of those sadly!!:diablo:

Im surprised not many parts are on the shelf for the companies that get the work regular, I understand the money problem but if time can be speeded up the customer “may” pay for the privelage of getting it much sooner.

I guess engines are in stock or are these made to order these days?

I suppose when a new part is made from scratch a drawing and a template is made so this should be kept for future builds.

Would it be profitable to build sections for the shelf or is this just too much time consuming and blinking too expensive?

Id have thought having parts made on the shelf would save time and expense at the time of a restoration, I appreciate you may not know when the next one will come through the doors but the guys in Duxford and the guys who do the Hurricanes would benefit from having parts ready to fit rather than having to build.

And wiring looms are these made from scratch for a spitfire at the time or can these be made, Also piping hydraulic hoses etc. Also im sure there is the problem with shelf life to some extent with parts made and a “used by date” to be used.

From a similar mechanical background the company i worked for would not do this on the basis of cost even though it would have saved us time on the job it was better to charge the customer in time than make new parts ready when the work load was quiet.

    Thanks Bruce.

So from start to finish if you put two men on a restoration and we will have a spitfire or a Mustang for our American friends how long should this take to get it airworthy if it’s completley re built from the ground up?

I understand please correct if im wrong that all panel rivets have to be removed panels checked replaced or refitted if ok?

Two men working 5 days a week at say 8-9 hrs i guess is the norm how long to build a spit/mustang?

    Thanks men PP.
