That comes across really mealy-mouthed, as if it was the best you can say about it.

It is a brilliant project, well executed, and marred only by erratic accessibility, and possibly a lack of in-depth captioning.

    Moggy

    Moggy,
I spent two excellent hours in the CGW building on Saturday morning.
The attendant, who’s name was Paul, couldn’t have been more accommodating and the exhibits are in fine fettle and more stuff is being added all the time.

The CGW building really is a treasure.
After so much complaining about the building being closed on previous visits, we took the time to write and thank the Hendon authorities that they’ve got the place open again.
I also discovered the reasons behind the stories last year regarding the heating system. The original system was a severe fire hazard as installed and did have to be completely replaced.

David Walton is charging TVOC hangar/storage rent and will continue to do so. I find this quite astonishing, but Pleming points-out that the rest of the hanger is a money-making asset (B&Q etc), but you’d think that of all people, Walton would have helped by waiving such charges… it seems not, and this is where a substantial amount of cash has gone. A staggering 275k so far and another 15k a month from here onwards. Absolutely mind-numbing, isn’t it?

    Mind Numbing???–Why???
    The bloke has to live.

Richard Branson has been approached repeatedly but he’s evidently not interested. Marshall’s are doing the work but they’re doing nothing for free – quite the opposite in fact and they’re treating the project as a purely commercial venture. Likewise, Rolls Royce are doing nothing and are in fact one of the most expensive parts of the project. British Aerospace is helping by taking-on liability for free, but the boss doesn’t want to offer any more financial support than that (even though it sounds like other BAe people do). So these Great British institutions aren’t helping at all – in fact they’re all busy making a fast buck! Shabby in the extreme…

So their shareholders should have a reduced dividend because someone thinks a Vulcan should fly??

Someone on here earlier mentioned financial naivity–this says it all.
    Later.

Former Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Knight, the chairman of the project’s trust, who commanded the bombers in the Falklands conflict, said . . . the plane is expected to fly displays for the next 15 years. . .The Vulcan was a “masterpiece of British design” and the aviation equivalent of Brunel’s SS Great Britain . . .
There you are, Mike, from the “horse’s mouth”!
    See you at Reno

The SS Great Britain was a pioneering design in shipbuilding, using iron and more importantly a screw propeller for the first time.

Please explain the Vulcan bomber in the context of ‘pioneer’–it certainly wasn’t the first use of the jet engine coupled to a bomber airframe–was it?

I’m afraid I suspect that the little speech by Sir Michael was constructed by some clever media guru.

If anyone here really thinks that stuffing twenty quid in an envelope is going to save the project I suggest you write £1,000,000.00 like this rather than £1M, which the media gurus prefer to see.

    then you get £1,000,000.00
    – 20.00
    = 999,980.00

Somebody somewhere needs to sit down and ponder these figures and make decisions from there.

As far ordinary folk who work hard to earn their wages each week go, my advice would be save it. Until you know for certain which way this is going to go for certain, the likelyhood is that you’re throwing good money after bad.

Your choice of course but there you are.

The same sum could do wonders for the Walrus, a unique survivor if returned to flight.

I always tend to think about the DH88 Comet, ‘Black magic’.

No AiB, I agree whole heartedly.

It’s common practice here to entertain a client, settle the bill and then add it to their invoice as a disbursement.

    You’ll travel far my son.
I’m glad that you’re handling my off shore Indian fund.

I can’t see anything wrong in Moggy’s post. These tangents are quite distracting, the issue under discussion is the rather woeful end of the 558 project.

I wonder how much money raised from enthusiasts was spent “chasing corporate sponsorship” and how prudently this was spent considering the lack of apparent success?

I’ve always found lunches on expenses (especially other peoples) taste so much better.

    Am I alone in this?

On a lighter note, AIB hows the Indian fund going 😉
    TT

    TT,
my Indian fund is also suffering from cash shortfalls and cost ‘uplifts’ I’m afraid to say.

A corporate sponsor is what’s required.

I’m sure that the Lawyers and Accountants, given the task of winding up the project and disposing of the assets will be eternally grateful for your contributions.

My money will be going to the Old Warden Collection and to aid the Blenheim Restoration.

Thanks in advance from the SVAS for that.

As far as the eventual winding up of this project goes, I imagine the lawyers will have a field day.
I wonder if the HLF have actually released any funding to date and if their T&C’s include a ‘clawback’ clause.

    No doubt we’ll see.

What a crying shame for such a valiant effort to be so close to failure now. I tip my hat to all involved for having tried so hard. Some how though, with so much work having been done, and all the OEM component work done, I doubt this will be the end. major corporate groups will always wait until a project is on its knees before offering to rescue it for peanuts. Harsh but normal practice for greedy blue chips. I wouldnt be surprised if one or two are watching from a far.

Please explain to me then, where will be the profit motive for them if they do that?

Whether they want to pay peanuts or not–they’ll still need to pump in millions of Pounds to get it to fly and keep it flying.
There’s no profit in this project for anyone much, except Marshalls I would imagine.

There are no corporate sponsors because to attract corporate sponsors, companies need to see some benefit from it.
What sort of company would see a potential increase in annual turnover from sponsoring this project–a large anorak manufacturer??–milletts perhaps??

Get real, airshows and the people who go to them are not generally seen as ‘main stream’ and as such corporate sponsors aren’t interested.

Hi Andy I did have but dumped all the info, when I started to concentrate on Wickford. I think the St Osyth one was from Boghol 3, apart from that didnt the crew set fire to it. However if you think some wreckage remains it may be worth a look at that too. Do you know if crash site is still available? Cheers Jules

    Julian,
indeed I think the aircraft was from Boghol 3.
The aircraft in question was Gotha G.V serial number 925/16 which came down at 23.50hrs on 19th May 1918.

The reason I raised this was that I was informed that quite large chunks of the aircraft were left laying in the field and sections of the wings were still there incorporated into a fence as late as the end of the 1960’s.

    Anything on this??
    Cheers

I believe it is still in the airship hangers at Dardington. Was definatly there when i was last inside about 5 years ago.

Ollie, I assume you mean Cardington and I doubt that a non rigid airship has been stored in an inflated condition for that long anywhere.

Please try and give a little rational thought before you post.

    Julian,
have you got any information on the Gotha brought down at St Osyth, Essex in 1918?
I can supply dates and some details but I wondered if you had anything.
    Cheers

Someone said to me earlier that this is a major event–my response was ‘What like World War 2 or the Black Death, you mean?’

    Bored, bored and bored.
