Well despite the bile that gets chucked at us doubters, one scratches away the surface and many of you have doubts too.

Has anyone realised that the greed of the organisers, when they fill the flightline with enclosures is the real reason people get under each others skin on the tank bank.
It’s because everyone’s crammed into one tiny space!

Why should I pay thirty quid to be treated like this??–after all I work for my money.

It’s paying twice to see an airshow.
    Vote with your feet people.
    I do–I WON’T BE THERE.

There are only 11 registered Sea Fury’s, two have the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Majors, ‘Dreadnought’ being one and ‘Furias’ being the other. The other 9, have heavily modified Wright R3350’s. You could add another 8 to that list from 2002 but they have either been destroyed by fire or crashed!

So, Sea Fury’s are definatly not in there masses in Reno

Not in masses but this one was there.
Flown by a very naughty boy.

In my view ,legends is the best show at Duxford; we used to do all the airshows there ,but are cutting back because of the spiralling cost. This year one day basic entry will cost us £70- I think that they have a cheek to charge £8- entry for little kiddies, if you think its hard to see anything as an “adult”,think how little they get to see. To me Duxford appeals on two levels I enjoy the old hangars, and the relative peace and quite, and the historical association, on non airshow days, and the flying at the airshows, however the two aren’t linked, and the only time we go inside hangars at airshows is to escape the rain!. The thing that disappoints, is the distance that the A/C display at, relative to the crowd line; they are now so far away that to photograph anything with a mere mortals camera, is a waste of time. The only place you can get a good shot is, ironically on the “tank bank”. I do feel inadequate in the length dept (camera wise), and obviously it would be controversial to suggest that, given the extreme long range abilities of these cameras, that they (the snappers), could afford to stand at the back of the crowd and still get a better picture than “joe public” at the front, thus allowing children and some disabled people a chance to feel the quality of the crowd barriers themselves. oh well its out there now

    Stuart,
    all good relevant points.
    Thanks.

    Herd mentality?

Nobody is compelled to go there AFAIK

    Moggy

    Absolutley correct Moggy.
I don’t go there–but where is it written that I can’t have an opinion that is at odds with the majority.
    Apparently I’m a d*ckhead.

To be fair to Duxford mate, the press office have cut back the number of press passes, so there should be less “wandering” around the aircraft. There may be other measures still to follow, which will aid the paying customer to get a clean view. They are aware of the problem, and are working on solutions. 🙂

    Fair comment Darren.
However, it still leaves me with the feeling that someone, somewhere, sees this as an opportunity to charge, charge, charge.
Correct me if I wrong but the overcrowding on the tank bank gets worse each year–why is that?

    Andy

PS. Mike, I’m not a restorer but a plane pusher/cleaner and general dogsbody. I also look after the PA system and sundry other jobs.
    Love every minute of it.

Point taken Andy, the difference is that you actually do something towards the conservation.

Not really aimed at you Mike.
I resent it being intimated by others that I’ve got my genitals grafted to my forehead because I make no secret of the fact that I’m not a big fan of Legends.
Flying Legends is a good show but I wish people would travel about a bit before making some of the sweeping statements made here.
I’ll give you an example. At La Ferte last year I paid entrance for both days and it came to less than one day at Legends.
The show started at 10.00am and on the Sunday at least finished at nearly seven at night!
There was of course the compulsory two hour break so the French could ‘lunch’ but that’s still a pretty full day.

At the CAF in 2004, the program of events was as equally long as Legends with of course the added bonus of much you never see in Europe.

What however really winds me up at Legends though is the fact that to really see anything, one needs to pay twice. Once to get in and again to see anything–it’s actually three times if you count the so called flight line walk–where invariably you can look at aircraft surrounded by ‘press’–that in the real world are groups of people who haven’t written an article in their lives but enjoy a free pass.

By all means–take me to task if I’m wrong or you disagree but if you call me names I can be offensive back–I actually enjoy that.

    I couldn’t agree more.

All, why do you give these Richard Craniums so much responsive attention.
    Just ignore them!
They display the sort of attitude normally associated with a baby or small child.
Don’t even respond to their postings and enjoy the show put up by others with their money for others to enjoy.

I can’t say I’ve seen any of these so-called aviation enthusiasts actually putting their hands in their pockets and doing something else that we could all say ‘yeah now that’s is either new and/or brilliant’.
They are so typical of the type that would ‘big up’ the scene to outsiders one minute, but play it down to the apparent insiders in order to feel how big and important in the historic avaition circle they are, but actually they are not.
Those that make too much noise are nothing.
The quiet ones are the real ones in the know.
    Bomberboy

Well I don’t like Legends particularly so I resent your statement.
Whether I’m an aviation enthusiast or not I’ll let others decide but I spend most of my free time working as a volunteer at an aviation venue in Bedfordshire.
So D*ckhead, what do you do in the practical sense?
Apart from brag about Duxford–ever been anywhere else??
Midland?, La Ferte Alais?, etc etc?

I remain your obediant servant etc etc.

    Pete
    no abuse from me.
Many of your reasons are exactly the ones that have made me give up on Leg-ends.
Why it’s supposed to be a pleasure to be squeezed onto that tank bank (the only place to watch unless one wants to pay again) with the horde is beyond my comprehension.
Why people go on endlessly about how wonderful it is, never ceases to baffle me.
There are other equally good shows around the World–Legends isn’t the only one.
And it’s expensive and It’s only a four hour show too.

Hurl abuse if you want but I’m done with it.

You will also see that apart from the original post-ee(?) no one actually responded.
So, that might mean that it was the action of one individual rather than a planned ‘clique attack’.

Personally, I hope you all have a jolly good time at Leg-ends.

    You need specs I think!
Go over there and actually spend time looking over things!

Gee – just because you people can’t see nothing you think that nothing is happening!

    Incorrect I think, Speedbird.
    We know nothing is happening.

On the 18th March this year, I wrote this:-

    I’ll tell you what.
    I’ll bet you £100.00 now–tonight, that it’ll never fly.
You in for that?–I know make it a thousand and you can set the date on when the bet expires.
Have you got a thousand quid between you?
    Andy

I’ll stand by it but your silence on a real offer remains.

Just got time at last to take this in. Fantastic stuff – and as for Gene de Marco’s taxiing the Camel on the blipper switch – amazing. The conventional wisdom is usually wheel it to the end of the runway, start, then chuck it and run!!

I wonder whether it’ll give Mr Sephton at Old Warden some ideas!:diablo:

I think the thoughts on the matter at Old Warden go along the lines that the blip switch puts a lot of strain on the engine and therefore is used ‘sparingly’.
Andy gave a talk at the SVAS AGM a couple of weeks ago where he spent some time explaining rotary engine operation.

Is that the collective noun ? Or is it a bore of anoraks ?

I’ve given this careful consideration and the correct usage is a ‘Tedium of Anoraks’.

Of course originally the intention was to restore the Hendon Halifax and a start was made on the work.
Then due to a change of policy at the mausoleum work was stopped.
So now it sits in the dark–neither one thing or the other.
    Very sad.
I’ve recently been researching a school friend of my Father’s called Derek Bell.
Sgt Bell was killed while on his way (along with the rest of his crew-mates) on their way to Hamburg in 1943.
The aircraft was a 76 Sqn. Halifax Mk V from Holme on Spalding Moor.
My respect for halibag crews grows daily.
