Four Monarchs were impressed into RAF service.
They were:-
G-AFJU became X9306
G-AFJZ became W6462
G-AFRZ became W6463
OO-UMK became TP819, with 24 Sqn. Later back to G-AGFW and then finally OO-UMK again.
Which aircraft are you thinking of in particular?
Cheers

And Madrid happens to be where then exactly?
That’s also ignoring the fact that we’ve had more than our fair share of bombings here in London too, thanks all the same. Or don’t those count seeing as they were planted with the financial support of Good Ol’ Boys in Chicago, Boston and New York in the days before the word “terrorist” entered the American language?
How exactly is the death penalty a “deterrent”!?! You need to check out the homicide rate between the USA and the EU, methinks.

Yes, there used to be plenty of ‘hat passing’ for the old country done and it wasn’t only in the big cities either.
I’ve had that argument amongst the plastic Paddys of of the good ol’ US of A more than once.

Well, it’s obvious to me, they were there on holiday.
It’s amazing what you can book through Expedia.com these days.
😉 🙂 😉 🙂
A nice little week in the Sun in Afghanistan.

Gnome
The Somme several times (once with Middlebrook but mostly with his guidebook) and me and Mrs AiB spent a week in Turkey with MM in 1998.
Five days on the peninsular.
When you get to England, we’ll pop over in the car (via the tunnel)–it’s dead easy.

Dave
you’re correct, Freyburg did win the VC at Gallipoli.
I think he was on a beach reconnaissance and went ashore himself.

Thanks Andy. And the Canadians lot one or two too on the Western Front. However their rememberance is of a different kind.
Interesting too that the French lost more lives than the Australians at Gallipoli.
Yes James,
The Canadians held the line at Ypres in 1915 after the first gas attack and suffered accordingly.
I know Newfoundland wasn’t then part of Canada but they suffered 70% casulties on July 1st 1916.
Newfoundland Park is well worth a visit if you ever get back to Europe.
The French contribution at Gallipoli is now largely forgotten.
They fought alongside the British 29th Div. at the southern end of the peninsular and also on the Asian side.
The French cemetary on the peninsular is very large indeed.

Hi James.
The losses on the Somme amongst The Anzacs dwarfed even Gallipoli.
At Poziers, I think the Aussies alone suffered over twenty thousand casulties.
That for a place the size of the vilage you used to live in.
Thanks for the thoughtful piece of writing.

Well done you old tart.
I’d like to say that you’ve achieved something unique and wonderful.
However, that’d be against my nature so I won’t.
Hi all.
I wrote about this incident a while ago.
I’d love any further information on this too.
Cheers
