Surely if this piece of film was so contentious it would have been better had it been destroyed shortly after filming.
Instead of that it was commercially available for some time therefore bringing profits to the film maker.
It’s a bit off to blame people here for something that’s available almost everywhere.

Thanks for that info Paul. Catastrophic structural failure can of course result from a number of different causes – corrosion, fatigue cracks or the explosive penetration of a missile. I’m just puzzled that there has been no attempt at salvage given that the exact location of the wreck is known and examination would clearly show if an explosion had occured.

Aidan Quigley was a friend of my father – I’d no idea he’d written a book. Thanks for the title and I’ll try a search for a used example.

I think it only applies to horse-drawn chariots as their brakes aren’t too good. Even so XX looks a bit fast, I’d have thought XV, especially for the ones with sabres on the wheel hubs.

Please be very careful about the way you phrase your points. My uncle was captured in Singapore and spent the next three years being “entertained” by the Japanese (at Changi I think). It left a marked impression on him and it wasn’t until about five years ago that any of the family knew what he had gone through.You are entitled to your view, but I take grave exception to my uncle and others like him being described as “old fogeys”, particularly when they very rarely talk about what they went through to allow the likes of you and I to speak freely. My uncle is now 81 and no longer in the best of health and I am very proud of him. As for today’s kids not worrying about “war ceremonies” (I prefer the word commemoration), I can tell you now that I know of at least 40,000 that do. They’re called Air Cadets and no doubt there are equivalent numbers in the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets and other youth organisations across the country. They are PROUD to stand shoulder to shoulder with these “old fogeys”, as you describe them to remember those who have fallen to defend our freedom. Please DO NOT tar all of the youth of today with the same brush. It is neither fair nor accurate. Your comment about it “taking over” TV and radio rather sums it up. If you can’t accept that for approximately TWO HOURS per year we remember those who fell, then I feel very sorry for you (or bloody angry, I can’t decide) and you don’t deserve to be treated with anything but contempt IMHO. As has been said, you are free to express your views because of the sacrifice of others. Think about it. 😡
