I presume that Sauron and Co expressed similarly robust views a couple of years ago when asked to maintain a silence to commemorate the victims of the terrible events of the 9th September 2001?

Yes I wasn’t overly impressed about the two minutes silence for 9/11 either, so I probably did have equally robust views.
I do however make a point of observing the two minutes silence on Nov 11th.
I do this because I realise that the prospect of Nazi Germany having suceeded in 1939/40 was one that was too terrible to contemplate.
However I will always defend someone’s right to decide not to observe any of these silences.
You see, my own Father always makes a point of completely ignoring remembrance Sunday. When we were kids he always used to dig his vegetable garden on that day.
While the two minutes silence was going on Dad would be down the garden digging away, working up a sweat.
If any busybody had have made a point of saying something to him I imagine if they were lucky they’d have been told to p*ss off, unlucky, got a slap.
I asked him one time why? The answer, ‘What’s the point of remembering them just once a year?’.

I’ve never questioned him again because I know he was wounded at Casino as well getting mentioned in dispatches.

Things ain’t always as clear as what we wish to believe–apparently.

This country used to struggle on regardless keeping what was once called a stiff upper lip.
Nowadays we have two minute silences for next to nothing.
We’ve become a nation of hand wringers.
Of course I feel sorry for the people that were killed but this organised public mourning is becoming a form of fascism.

If you’re not seen to be publicly inconsolable that means you’re not commited in some way.
I remember an incident last September when several of us from this forum were at Old Warden during the two minutes silence to commemorate the second aniversary of 9/11. There was some looney old bag shouting at perfectly innocent folk who were walking by unaware that any silence was taking place–due to the inherent weaknesses of the OW PA system.
How dignified I thought.

I ponder at times, if as a nation we’d have displayed the sort of weaknesses we seem to have a habit of today in 1940 what the outcome would have been.

I also wonder if the media reptiles would still have this story on the front page two weeks later, if it had only been the local native population of these places killed as opposed to a load of western holidaymakers.

Actually, reading Andy-in-Beds posting about a Saturday morning TV series, I wondered if he meant the US TV series ‘Whirlybirds’ which I can vaguely remember being televised on a Saturday morning in b/w featuring LA Police Bell 47Gs. Probably neither of you are old enough to remember that from the’50s? Anyone else remember it?

Albert, no I too am old enough (just) to remember Whirlybirds and their Bell 47’s.
What I’m talking about though was what the BBC used to call a ‘public information film’ and it was the team performing it’s display routine with I think a classical music backing track.
Quite neat.

Someone else must remember it.
