Andy in BedsPrompted by a fellow forumite to delve back into my family history research, I found out last night that a not too distant relative, Sidney Burgoine, worked for Hawker Siddely cWW2 and was allegedly MD at one point (or certainly senior management). My question is, does anyone know where I could verify this? After the success with my Ben Lee thread, this should be easy!
Just for a further challenge, I also discovered close relatives who served in the RAF and any further info would be welcome, other than Gazette notifications and service number details which I already have (for Kenneth).
Alfred Charles Burgoine (no number given) – Capt, RAF 1919, Technical Branch
Kenneth Alfred Burgoine (153078) – Flt. Lt. General Duties (Pilot?, looks likely aircrew as others in the same list category hold DFC’s etc.).
I’ll be posting the same question on the “other” forums too.

there was a Sidney Burgoine who joined The Sopwith Aviation Company in 1913 as a boat builder. He worked on the company’s seaplanes and flying boat designs. If he stayed with Sopwith and later Hawker’s he may well have risen to senior management.
Not much to go on but it may help.

I know what MOTF has been through this year and he has my deepest sympathy.
As far as running a Ltd company goes in the UK. Don’t bother. I was employing six people, (apart from self) all who were paying into the system (instead of scrounging out of it), three of them were higher rate income tax payers we also payed VAT, corporation tax and other sundry bits and pieces.
When we had a tax audit my book keeper said he was made to feel like a criminal, why? Well sometimes if our employees worked late we treated them out to dinner after work. Against the rules it seems. I suggested to the auditor that perhaps he’d prefer that we packed the business in and all went on the dole?
Then the f*ck*ng Government wonder why small business men don’t bother.
If you want people to extend themselves–encourage them!!

1. Package wedged so tightly in letterbox it had to be torn to extract it
2. “Next Day Delivery” arriving FIVE DAYS late

A friend of ours worked for the Post Office until this year (and had done for fifteen years). She left in dispair at the conditions that the numerous restructurings had brought forth.
At one point in Luton they had foreign immigrants from Eastern Europe delivering letters.
In my experience it always helps if one can read the address on a letter.
Several of these people couldn’t!! It boggles my mind what the people who employed them must have between the ears–f*ck all springs to mind.

This last tax year (2003-04) was the first for which I’ve had to file a tax return, as I’ve been moonlighting/freelancing on top of my regular salaried job. The tax return was submitted, and yesterday I got my tax bill (sadly the Royal Mail are all too adept at delivering these…).
The amount for 2003-04 was as expected, but also there’s a calculation for 2004-05, which equates to the same amount of tax as for the previous year, split into two installments, the first payable along with the 2003-04 sum by 31 Jan 2005.
I thought I’d only be paying my tax for the tax year 2003-04 in January, so this extra amount comes as quite a shock, especially as I shan’t have my 2004-05 figures until the end of the current tax year in April!
Is this standard practice by the Inland Revenue, or have they ballsed-up my tax bill?

put sinply (if there is such a thing in the tax World).
The IR have made a calculation for the current tax year based on your earnings for 2003/04 (last year).
This was based on your earnings above and beyond your normal job. These could be dividends, bonuses or in your case another job.
You can ring the Tax office and they will cancel these payments if you claim the reasons for them will not re-occur in the current year 2004/05.
However, if you do this and you do subsequently earn more of the same this year and declare on it your next return (will cover this tax year and you’ll receive it in April 2005) the IR will charge you interest on it back to the date of the original provisional payment (now).
So the choice is yours pay it now on the assumption that you’ll earn it–the
Inland Revenue will then balance it next year against what you owe or get it cancelled and run the risk of paying interest if you do earn above and beyond in this tax year.

Andy in BedsUnbelievably, there’s a phone-in on the radio discussing the idea put forward by someone official (didn’t catch who) suggesting that after next year’s 60th anniversary of the end of WW2, that we will have done “enough” remembering and we should switch our focus to perhaps using the occasion to remember those in the civil service who have died in the course of duty – e.g. firemen, police officers etc. They of course deserve remembering, probably at a greater level than they currently are, but to suggest we have ever done “ENOUGH” remembering with regards to our service dead fills me with disgust. Just another example of the PC/woolly liberals/moral “do-gooders” atempting to ensure we water down anything remotely worth caring about or believing in. Perhaps this same individual would like to personally write to the surving family members and comrades of these deceased WW1 & 2 veterans and tell them we’ve finished with their sacrifice, on your way, nothing to see here? 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡
We have a moral-bound obligation to remember these people. No earthly force or government can release us from it by saying “enough”.

While I tend agree with you that things like this are very irritating always try to remember ‘quiet news day’. It makes good copy to stir up the great unwashed, brings in viewing/listening figures, sells copy whatever.
Don’t rise to it. Even better don’t buy any of the comics these reptiles write in (or listen to their rubbish radio). I don’t.

I take on board your views but I’m sorry but it still angers me.
Yes I’ll mark the separate days but I remember veterans every day, not just from the Second World War but from other conflicts too.
We need to move on, but for us to grow as a nation we need to learn from our history. Thats why I thought that next year would be probably the final big commeration, simply as the veterans are getting older, and we are at peace within Europe, so why continue to remind our now friends in Germany that we were once enemies?

Well tomorrow I’ll certainly be remembering a veteran as my 82 year old father visits on a Thursday.
We usually have a cup of Tea after lunch and invariably the subject turns to the events between 1939 and 1945. He’s such a voracious reader you see.
Last week it was the Italian navy he was reading about. Being a 8th army veteran his opinion of Italian fighting prowess is not high and his opinions are not always expressed in what today would be considered the most politically correct manner.
But we lend each other books and trade what we know.
I once asked him why he volunteered for the Suffolk Regiment on his 18th birthday expecting a heroic response only to be told he was sick of working in a bloody shoe factory!
Lest we Forget.

I have no problem with this.
A day of rememberance on July 10th falls between VE day and VJ day.
As far as I’m concerned Government is making some effort to mark the end of WW2.
I have no doubt that some official commemoration ceremonies will be held on that day, which will no doubt include senior members of the Government and The Royal Family.
As far as the incident mentioned in the rag about the memory of Lt Robert Gray being insulted by this date is nothing short of cr*p and a perfect example of the sort of thing this rag is famous for.
Mark the day people, and on that day go and find a veteran and talk to them.
