No they didn’t (btw that’s a terrible cliche you know). Nobody died so that we could walk around calling people bloody foreigners.. My grandfather didn’t try to kill bloody huns and wops and get harangued by wogs so that he could call them those names. He risked dying to kill them because the governments of the powers that were decreed he do so for their own reasons. He wasn’t trying to defend or save Poland. He wasn’t giving me the right to eat a cheese toastie.
nb I use the above terms to illustrate the point in the language of the day, not as an insult to those descended from the northern tribes, those ‘WithOut Papers’ or the Western Oriental Gentlemen.
