I wonder if indeed these ever left the drawing board ?

Some of the design features are reminiscent of a couple of Bloch aircraft, although not a match,
and I doubt drawings would have been in German.

I’d be interested to see any before and after pictures of Castle Camps,
although I think that may have just been a grass strip ?

I have before and after pictures of the village, but not the airfield.

I would also like to see any old pictures of Willingale.

I am thinking on going personally to their branch and ask directly about the job, but in some of their offers they make pretty clear that they only accept online applications, so I don’t know if that may be counter productive. What do you think?

It doesn’t hurt to find out what the job entails, and what the minimum qualifications might be. Just to make sure you aren’t wasting your time.

Looks interesting.
Although I wonder why they couldn’t have incorporated it into the May Bank Holiday weekend ?. When the Red arrows and Typhoon (s) will be there for the Southend Airshow.

Not quite then and now, but two from Hunsdon that I managed to create from old IWM images and the exact locations now morphed together.

That brings back memories of when we use to go camping there, over 50yrs ago.
There were two ponds we used to fish in. Nine Ashes Farm I seem to remember.
The runway was still there in those days.

Why is it that some aircraft restoration projects have this air of secrecy built into them.
Unless the project is being filmed for a TV documentary, or video.

Otherwise to me, it seems rather unnecessary. Secrecy for the sake of secrecy.

Well considering HMS Queen Elizabeth won’t even enter sea trials until 2017 and see an F35 on deck until late 2017 maybe even 2018 with a planned full in service date of 2020 it is not quite the disaster one would think. It will take a number of years for the FAA and RAF to work the jet into the carrier operational system.

You forgot the bit about it being £1bn+ over budget .

I’m sure that I saw something on TV about the Sea King, saying that when it eventually entered service,
it was already 20yrs out of date.
Although that probably goes for a lot of the equipment used by our armed services.

I had access to some of the Essex archives a few years ago.
A lot of damage was done, and a lot of people hurt, by various pieces of ordnance coming back to earth.
We find spent (and some live) ammunition over a wide area, while out metal detecting.

Also lots of shrapnel, and the occasional AA fuse head. One dated 1916 !

It was called Spymaker and starred Jason Connery – I remember it! I also recall Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland was used for the assault sequence but I don’t remember the aircraft sequence !

Yes that’s the one, and I wondered which castle it was. Bamburgh being one of the few in the area which we haven’t visited.

The glimpse of the aircraft come near the end, when he comes back from the commando raid, and jumps out of the DC-3.
I didn’t see anything on the credits.

Southend Airport are offering free car parking for January & February in one of their car parks if you pre-book, it has not gone down too well with some of the Anti-Southend Airport people!

I got banned from the Echo website before Christmas, but am back on again now with a different user name.
Mustn’t mention anything to do with Savile or our traveller “friends” 😀

Anything to do with the airport does stir up a hornet’s nest.

If you haven’t already done it, it may be a good idea to ask what sort of experience they look for in somebody they take on.

I would imagine you would be expected to do jobs requiring some expertise ?

I’m going to choose to assume someone forgot to add ‘Memorial Flight’ to that sentence as opposed to actually being THAT ignorant…

Then again, I almost fell out of my chair when Mathew Pinsent revealed he’d never heard of Monte Cassino, a battle his grandfather fought in. If an Eton and Oxford grad has never heard of it, perhaps we should rethink how we’re teaching history.

From personal experience, while doing some work for a Cambridge graduate who was teaching Latin and Ancient Greek,
that doesn’t surprise me in the least.
