Let’s face it, the crimes he has to face in Sweden may be local news, but certainly wouldn’t be of worldwide interest. He hasn’t been charged with a crime, and even the Swedish government has said they have no legitimate reason to seek Assange’s extradition. It’s just an excuse to ‘get him’ on something.
It’s very easy to call him a coward, but what are the alternatives? Hand himself in so that the full might of some miffed American court can imprison him for life, or execute him?
The UK government will do anything to ingratiate themselves to the US – and even go so far as to violate international diplomatic laws and conventions, which could have much more serious implications worldwide.

Also the “secrets” he was supposed to have exposed. Secret to whom ?
I doubt if any were secret to the Russians or Chinese.
I suspect the things he exposed were more along the lines of
embarrassments to certain individuals, than threats to national security.

If he does ever get to court in the US, I imagine it will be held behind closed
doors, with the proceedings being censored.

We were out on Saturday night with members of our astronomy cub, by the sea wall on the Dengie peninsular in Essex.

According to the chap who was keeping count.

From darkness to Moonrise at about 00.30hrs we counted 57 meteors, some much
brighter than any star in the sky, two splendid high passes of the ISS and countless other artificial satellites.
The drifting cloud prevented the meteor count from being much higher but an enjoyable night
was had by all despite the very unpromising start.

Was that David Beckham in the closing ceremony?

He has been all over the place this last couple of weeks.

I liked the remark in one of the newspapers, that he must have felt out of place, being amongst all of
these medal winners, when he has never won anything when wearing an England shirt.

No I didn’t say that at all, but going back to the original post, yes of course
money can bring success. Although it doesn’t guarantee it.

A youngster who has parents willing to spend a lot of money to take them all
over the country to competitions, is more likely to succeed than a child
whose parents have no money, or no interest. That’s just a fact of life.

Different strokes for different folks as the saying goes. The USA has the collegiate system for athletics which will always be much stronger than anything GB can provide. Having implied US domination of track events, which Country do Usain Bolt and Johan Blake run for?

The opening ceremony wasn’t bad, apart from Paul McCartney.

The closing ceremony had one or two plus points. Ed Sheeran singing “Wish you were here”,
and Eric Idle standing out amongst some of the dross.

Who on earth was that awful female singer at the beginning ? I though that was a joke at first.
Victoria Beckham nearly cracked a smile as she mimed along with the rest of them. Then almost fell
over when the taxi pulled away.

What was the idea behind the crack heads, sorry models, parading around ?

Paying a gratuity in a restaurant is covered by HMRC and ideally all gratuities are taxable……..etc

Of course we all (I hope) feel proud of what our athletes have achieved.

Although saying that, in a couple of years time, many of us will struggle to
remember the names of more than half a dozen of of our medal winners.

Then we can ask, “What apart from the medals, has the investment
brought us ?” Only a small handful of the winners will go on to profit
from their success to any great extent. Most will go back to their jobs or
college, and carry on as usual.
Will it have brought more youngsters into sport, perhaps. Mostly only for those
whose parents can afford to finance them.

I just don’t see how we will ever be able to compete with the likes of the
USA in swimming and track events. Especially when we can’t master the
task of handing over the baton in a relay race.
