I thought that the aircraft needed a full restoration? I’m surprised to see a permit application in already.
Good luck!
Of the two airworthy R1’s, I understand that 1 is going to East Midlands, the other is going to Duxford. I don’t know what will happen to the 3rd now that Newark don’t want it? I understand that they will remain in service until the end of March so I suppose we can expect delivery flights sometime around then. I would imagine that the destination airfields will have to have pretty secure facilities while they strip the classified kit out of the R1’s… Unless they’re going to do that at Waddington and then ferry them over, but I would have thought given the amount of kit to come out, that would make them unflyable.
Apart from the Biggles Biplane BE2 which is nearing its first flight, also at Sywell we have a full size SE5 on the go,(Gipsy Queen powered) , a Fokker DVI and are involved with another Fokker DR1 project. We also have the ex “Wing” static Sopwith Pup recieving some TLC.
TBM, Are you involved in the SE5? Do you have any photographs that you can show us?
Has anyone on here ever been on this course?
Thank you all very much for the replies… The book has been ordered and I’m going to try and get myself onto one of the LAA courses.
Thank you. I really appreciate all the replies.

The relevance of the Il2 in the milestones of flight was as jeepman rightly points out, the Il2 was the most numerous military aircraft of all time… Thats why it was going to be in milestones of flight.
Weren’t the Soviets our allies during WWII (or Great Patriotic War as they call it).
Debatable! – But yes, I guess according to the history books, the Soviets were allies.
How many Nimrod MR2 airframes are left at Kinloss ? Is to late to hope that one can be roaded to IWM Duxford ? Crying shame they never got one delivered by air 😡
I understand thats because they’re going to get an R1 instead.
Didn’t you come on a bit strong there, Nash? I know you are dedicated and committed volunteer but the bod was only asking for a bit of help…….;):)
Can I just echo what you’ve written there… Especially given the ‘enthusiasm’ that nashio has shown in his posts in the past. Nothing wrong with enthusiasm, but dont then shoot people down for showing the same ‘enthusiasm’ as you have previously.
Now having said that, it depends on how many Chinooks the RAF has….
Unfortunately we are desperately short of heavylift helicopters.
A bit of thread cheep, but I dont understand why we dont just go out and buy a shed load of Hip’s from one of our Eastern European friends… It would be a cheep solution and help fill a large gap.
Back to chinooks….!
I.M.H.O I think she should be retired NOW
Let soldiers suffer on the ground so she can retire to a museum?… What a waste that would be.
It would be like not letting your star player play football any more in case they got injured. I like your passion, but I cant agree with your logic.
In a word…. Never!
The ‘Brunty Boys’ have their work cut out for them looking after the two aircraft they have, never mind giving up their time to disassemble someone else’s aircraft!
All their kit would need moving to Binbrook for at least 6 months, with them their every weekend…. Every nut and bold will be seized because no one has bothered to wax oil her or even make sure that she’s properly covered… She is sat out in all weathers. All the while, the LPG’s 2 aircraft would be suffering because there would be no one there to maintain them.
I respect Charles for coming on here and telling his side of the story, but until the LA get their house in order and assemble a dedicated team of volunteers to look after her where she is, then there is no point in talking about a move anywhere. You need to start with the basics… Wax Oil, tyres ful of Nitrogeon and covers! – If you cant get that bit right then there is no hope.
As for stretching her legs at Elvington. I think thats a non starter. Every pipe will be perished, every joint corroded. Its a MASSIVE task. Didn’t it take Mike BH in S. Africa several years just to re assemble one of his aircraft, and they were stripped and transported correctly?
Cracking pics VX927, can’t beat a bit of speed tape!
Thank you. I’ll get the slide scanner out and do a few more… There are some interesting photos refuelling behind Victors and Hercs… One when the tip snaps off the probe!
I may have posted these before, but the photos below are scans from my fathers slides. He took them while serving with 201 squadron… They’re all taken during the Falklands campaign appart from the last one which I think was taken at Anconbury.

The dayglow fish and arrestor hook are because they landed short and hit the water on their way into ascension island. Also the slogan “Have flaps will travel” – The destroyed the flaps on landing
