The cost of training an RAF pilot is anything from £1m to £5.7m (a very quick google search) and we can afford to ditch them like confetti.
It is all relative, but I would say that compared to those figures, your £8.8million isn’t a lot of money for the Reds.
I know its all relative to peoples own perceptions, however this country GIVES AWAY nearly £1MILLION every hour (£8 Billion per year) in foreign aid. I’m not saying its not a worthy cause, but like I said, I don’t think £8.8M is too much… Others will, and I respect their opinions.
VX927 (and others) re Post #13.
I spent more than 40 yrs either in (2 periods), or as a civil servant (and Reserve Officer), in the Operational side of the RAF – so I do know what I’m talking about. Any Air Force is a Defensive/Offensive organisation. It is NOT Air Show fodder, however much the airshow junkies may wish it.
When we could afford it the Arrows were good TV fodder. We can no longer afford it. Do you wish to see this frippary kept in being at the expense of Tac Comms Wg/Tac Supply Wg, and the Spec Forces Support Grp, etc, etc? If you do then you are not thinking straight. Get real. This is difficult stuff. Air Shows do not defend the country!

Then you’ll know full well just how must waste you are responsible for them. Nothing did more harm to our armed forces than handing over control to the civil service.
I just wonder, in your 40 years of service to our nation, how many Red Arrows crew did you meet? I’m just curious as to how you come to describe them as ‘divas’… I can not think of a description that is further from the truth.
Its funny… Fly fast jets… They all love you, fly for the BBMF… they all love… Go fly for the Red Arrows and you’re slated.
This country has been starving its armed forced, long before the current financial crisis… If you look at the cost of keeping the Reds, its peanuts compared to other parts of the service.
I’m not asking you (or anyone) to like the Red Arrows, but please don’t imply that our Tac any wing is suffering as a result of the Red Arrows.
Dave (Post #2)
Agree. Fighter Pilots should be about killing (from, and in, the air) the Soveriegn’s Enemies – not farting about in front of TV cameras like divas!
If we have to cut (and I’m not convinced it’s actually necessary) then cut the fripparies – and The Arrers are a frippary!
Resmoroh.
What a quality post! – Lets scrap the BBMF while we’re at it… Just another play thing for those diva pilots…. What a joke of a post Rosmoroh.
I think it would a bad day when the RAF decided it can no longer afford a national display team… When the French, Italians, Spanish and Poles come to RIAT, and all we can do is watch.
Yes, that’s about it. I recall it was actually that they either couldn’t, or didn’t want to fit hijack-proof doors to the cockpit.
Moggy
I remember seeing something issued by the CAA saying that the UK CAA was still able to issue exemptions against laws such as the fitting of hijack-proof doors, cockpit voice recorders etc, but that no UK operator (talking about the DC3 here) ever applied for such an exemption.
It would be nice to see one housed in the museum at RAF Scampton when they’re finished with!
12hours and 22minutes into 2013 and we’re already talking about the bl00dy dog…. 😮
Well, thats one good reason not to go!!!
What a little hero.
Rest in peace…

Not really but still a great demo! In real time, drip trays needed to be moved, Houchin started and brought on-line, etc. Ground crew were up the ladder first to assist the pilot with straps during start-up and we could still get the jet airborne within 2 mins rather than 2.30 to just around the corner!

😀
Really? Then what would you consider to be fast? You had the aircraft airborne in 2mins years ago at the height of the cold war when it was being practiced on a weekly basis…. Here, a group of enthusiasts have the aircraft rolling out the shed within 1min35 of the horn sounding and you dont think thats fast?
If you look at how the qshed is positioned at binbrook (no 90deg turns) I think its fair to say that the LPG wouldnt be far behind you with a bit of practice!
What would you consider to be quick in terms of leaving the shed? Time to runway cant be a realistic measure as the LPG shed hasnt been positioned for QRA
Yep, It was a great day out.
There are about 5.5million brits living abroad (according to the BBC)… I dont know how many of then are working.
