It’s worth mentioning that the ‘door’ on the starboard side wasn’t really a door at all, but was in fact a panel that could be jettisoned in an emergency (particularly important if the aircraft came to rest inverted).
Yes, importantly the door isn’t hinged, but jettisonable.
Can anybody confirm or deny the rumour I have just heard, that the Duxford Super VC10 has failed a health & safety review & may be scrapped.
I sincerely hope that this is not the case, for this or any other airliner displayed at Duxford.
I realise that the RAF will be able to donate VC10’s in the near future but it was a commercial airliner first & foremost, especially the Super model.
Sounds like an excuse for the Imperial WAR Museum to get its hands on a Service aircraft to me….
the day they (MP spongers) get a back bone n man up to the fact that it was them and their policies that should take the blame and not the ‘many’ brave lads at the pointy end of the stick who should suffer the stigma/bad press, then it will happen, but as we all know they are like jelly fish in that department. 🙁
per ardua ad astra!
steve_p Err, could you translate that please? I do not have a clue what you are on about.
The gentleman is saying “People need to realise it’s the politicians who are responsible for the decisions taken in wartime and they should be held accountable for the actions taken by the aircraft crews, however, the politicians seem to not have the courage of their convictions. I’m sad
Through Endeavour to the Stars”
Hope that helps steve_p

My Legends wish is be to actually make it back from Afganistan and its associated ‘decompression’ in time! I celebrate my birthday at Legends each year and with exception of last year, have been a volunteer for a handful of years. It’s a great show (from both sides of the fence), and seems to be unmatched in the UK.
As for a realistic flying wishlist:
MiG-3
TFC’s fleet
FW190
Mitsubishi ‘Zero’
The biggest flypast of Spitfires/Seafires ever!
Polikarpov Rata
And (controversially) drop:
The aerobatic teams (Stearmans and Yaks)
I’ll hopefully see some of you there….I’ll bring the sunshine with me!

Dear me…
This thread is evoking some real drama. I would suggest that an airworthy aircraft is one that is fully serviceable and capable of leaving a runway under its own means, regardless of it’s paperwork status. For example it takes off, pilot bashes it about a bit, lands hard and and bursts a tyre, the aircraft is unserviceable. Therfore not airworthy. Similar to a car with an MoT and a burst tyre.
During this time of year in the UK, I would suggest a whole lot less than the aforementioned 40-something are airworthy or flight ready.

I hope they can increase the lights in the Battle of Britain hall then and get staff to enable ALL sections to be open daily. I’ve never been in the White hangar in 3 visits due to closure…..
The P47 and Blenheim surely look odds on for a return to flight next year. Shame the Beau won’t be joining them. Also be nice if the single seat Sea Fury finally makes it into the air… she seems to be taking forever.
Wyvernfan,
I doubt that the P-47 will be ready next year, there’s still so much more hidden work left to do. An easier task would be to get the rest of the fleet re-catogorised as airworthy, no easy task in itself.
Having seen the images above (and thanks for posting Mr M), it reminds me of what a gem TFC is. Mr Grey has a superb collection of aeroplanes and engineers, each quite unique. I wish the whole team the best of wishes and success for the forthcoming year and hope to visit soon.
Btw BWB, I’ll let you and BH know if and when I can come and get my hands mucky, and wish that were sooner rather than later.
Cheers

So will it or won’t NX611 be flying? And will the engines be inhibited until a major servicing is carried out?
Ah Roobarb, that’s where you’re wrong. They will be used to prolong tradition…namely “good money after bad”.:diablo:
Having said that, at least it’s not the cluster f**k that Rivet Joint will be IF it goes ahead….expect an increase in taxes (more than 2.5%:D)
What a machine!
Peter,
You can see it as it should be in the link you’ve posted, with the undercarriage legs at correct extension, not the sad, gagged, unimposing look it has now! I do wish that museums would at least make the gags to illustrate the correct height of the machine. The Duxford Lanc is another case, where because of sagging oleos it just looks “small”.
Cheers,

The Best:- Despite having many hours in Dakotas, Lancaster, Hawks, and more to boot (all as a “Flying Spanner” and worthy of a story sometime), my best flying experience was going solo in a Glider at Bicester in 2000. It was an 8 minute flight in worsening weather, but felt fabulously free of restriction. It was all over in a flash, but the feeling has helped prompt me to finally start flying lessons at Waddington this year…
…The Worst:- In a RAFAT Hawk at low level in Scotland with ZERO viz as it was ten tenths pea soup. After what seemed like an age twisting around in the valleys and only just being able to see the vague outline of the Glenns above us, we entered a complete grey mass of fog/cloud/mist and stayed there for more seconds than I was comfortable with before pulling up and zooming to 22,000 feet. At the top of the climb all I thought was “I’m hot and I feel sick”, before we descended into Scampton. Upon arrival, one of my colleagues said “Are you OK, your skin is green?!” It was and I managed to keep everything down. Yeugh.

The topic was locked down last time Debbie, but nothing is set in stone. No further debate is necessary, it’ll all come out in the wash.

Superb !!!!I do Like Capt.Boring…still a child at heart…..and single.
Didn’t see the programme, but met him at Dux recently and although we weren’t introduced, the totty on his arm would suggest otherwise:)

In my further research of purchasing an aeroplane, it was pointed out to me to factor in an engine rebuild, is this fair? Would YOU want to be sitting behind a relatively unknown quantity (despite what the paperwork may say)?
If so I contacted a rebuilder of the O200 based in St Neots and was quoted a huge £11K for a full rebuild…Is this typical??
Factor in that cost with the purchase price of the aircraft (around £16k), I just can’t imagine asking the guy to take £5000 for his aeroplane!:o My budget incidentally is less than the £16K asking price.
I need to know what further questions to ask of the vendor and an idea of what to offer him initially.
Kind regards,

Continental 0200 engine
Is that a Rolls Royce O200? as parts are getting hardish to come by.
Also what are its hours like etc?? Engine and Airframe.
Hi Tony,
This is the O200 to which I refer:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_O-200
As for airframe/engine hours and specs:-
Airframe 560 hrs total, 210 since major overhaul,
Engine 630 hrs since major overhaul, 220hrs since top overhaul.
Permit for 11 months.
Price is less than £20K, which is my idea of affordable! (I’ll still need to borrow some funds though).
