french halifaxes
A free french officer i knew back in the early eighties remarked that the 347/346 halibags were used on squadron until replaced with lancasters in the early fifties (nx611 being one),as to their fate when disposed of, apparently all were scrapped, the main reason for their demise was a consistent lack of spares and having to resort to taking aircraft out of service , cannibalising them in order to keep the other haifaxes flying ,this is of course an account given some years after the war how accurate it is cant be said however he was there 😎
not forgetting, drug dealers, pimps, and the occasional policemen, the list is endless if one delves deep enough, didnt the late pope use one too?:)

Ok an argument that could do loops forever, my final view on this subject, 4 x 4 vehicles have a place. 1. Farms 2. Fields 3. Racing 4. Rescue. Not central London .
exactly a place for everything, and everything in its place 😎

airfield arrester wires
thankyou everyone for these responses and many photos etc .
Hi Alan
By pure coincidence I visited the “Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre”
Museum at Tattershall Thorpe, on the B1192 south of Woodhall Spa, back in September and discovered that they have an example of this type of airfield arrester gear on display. I took a few photos (attached) – hope they are of interest. Place is well worth a visit – only a short drive north of RAF Coningsby.I’ve also found an old shot of a Lanc with arrester hook and clearly shows arrester wires across runway. Afraid I don’t know which airfield involved.
I haven’t forgotten our other on-going pm subject – will post to your e-mail address asap.
Cheers
Richard
many thanks for posting the photos richard, i can remember seeing the winding gear inside the pit at marston moor under several feet of water ! interesting shot of the lanc too it must be a rare photo thanks again
regards
As to your query, after checking with ‘Fokker Commercial Aircraft’ a book produced by Fokker, it mentions talks were held postwar with various American airliner makers for a possible joint venture. But the end result was no deal! Douglas were only interested in their own long range aircraft and Boeing did suggest providing some design input and if plans came to fruition would implement the sales. But military orders and a new commercial design (the 707) ended Boeings interest. I can find no mention of the Douglas DC16 in my literature but I dont claim to have every bit of information there is.
hello there many thanks for your research efforts i do appreciate this

radio 4
just listened to an exellent obituary for paul tibbets on radio 4 anyone else catch it?
This infiltration of small lighting units in the media must stop. The Times letters page has been plagued by such questions for months.I have since canceled my subscription.Their proliferation is,I’m glad to say,in decline, seeing as tables as such are a thing of the past (ignore what Ikea says,it’s government spin).A recent poll taken in the Brazilian rain forests came up with not a one!
Here,in my igloo,I don’t need one as the sun shines 25 hours a day and illuminates my domicile through the holes I made in the roof.
If I put a table on my wish-list to Santa, and if he delivers,I would invite the little old lady with the shopping-bag-on-wheels,the nutter that is always on the night bus,the guy who invented IMAX,and the youngest relative of The Earl Of Sandwich.
