Company based at Tollerton was called Truman Aviation, apparently no relation but I doubt this. If you look at the hanger wall from the road you can still see the letters.
During the 50’s they repaired Constellations, I remember seeing their tails sticking out of the hanger and belonged to a Brazilian airline, also at that time were converting Lincolns to freighters, my brother has pictures of this that I’m trying to get hold of to publish on this site.
I used to live in Wollaton and at Balloon crossroads was the Merlin test site, which still exists as an industrial area, we used to sneak in there when we were kids.
My mother was strafed by a German a/c attacking this site and had to throw my brother, who was a baby at the time, into a ditch.
One aviation connection with Notts was that my mother used to make parachutes, I believe it was for a company called Cussons, I’ll take a break from this and confirm it from her.
The buildings at Balloon crossroads consist of a T2 hangar and several brick built engine test buildings, with observation rooms, I am reliably informed that the noise used to be unbearable.
Theres a white, unmarked 747 that regularly flies into Stansted that is supposed to be part of the CIA fleet, I was on site at Takeley yesterday morning when it took off, very loud and with a very steep climb, any comments or is this a topic for Mod mil.
Well spotted, Pete! How do you do it?
Sounds like your VE Day party was about the time that we had a lot of Lynx near Cornish Hall End (Rivetts, the next house up on the same side as Shore Hall – the one with the trees lining the drive). Admittedly I had the attic bedroom for reasons of teenage siblings but all the same it’s quite a thrill to see a Lynx outside close enough to see the pilot silhouetted in the green glow from the instruments BELOW you!

It’s called ‘architects eye for the interesting and unusual’
The convoy came on quite a devious route from Wattisham via Haverhill and Steeple Bumpstead, I had a panic stricken phone call from some friends in Steeple wondering what the hell was going off, good old Pete, supposed to know all things military, some of the vehicles looked pretty ancient, of course I videod the whole exercise, lots of headlights and noise.
I managed to obtain the convoy marker posts which now reside in the garage, having spotted them being put up I knew something was afoot. Next time you go over to Sampford, let us know and we can have a pint in your wierd pub and I can view the fabled packing case shed at close hand.
Incidentally, with regard to the VE-Day party, I wrote off to quite a few organizations to try and get flybys for the event, had some brilliant replies, especially from the RAF, the Sally B passing over followed by the BBMF seemed quite a coincidence, the spam burgers were also very popular.
Looking for the Chinese Embassy?
Moggy
It was heading north, probably to test it’s spy cameras over Hucknall, don’t recall any Chinese restaurants in Notts till the 60’s.
My first airshow at Newton circa 1956, the airfield attack by Vampires with lots of flares, then a pass by Canadian Sabres at supersonic speed that took out a lot of windows and frightened the c**p out of me.
My brother had a lot of a/c recognition books that I used to constantly study to the point that in infants school, if a wierd a/c came over I was rushed outside to identify it and had to make an anouncement to the class.
I clearly remember being confused as to whether what had flown over was a C-112 Boxcar or a Noratlas, had to guess at the former.
One I very clearly remember was a very low flying B-36 Peacemaker, what the hell was that doing over Nottingham in those days.
Just read Daves note, by a coincidence it was my dad who really influenced me and who passed away recently, sorely missed at DX on sunday.
Apparently they were operating at night a couple of days ago.
Moggy
Should have waited for the reply, just spent half an hour splashing through cow muck and mud to get to the north crash gate where I recieved the attentions of an over friendly terrier.
Weather worse than DX on sunday, most of airfield obscured by mist, nothing moving out there, taxiways look in good order though, but then again it is used for gliding.
Didn’t hear anything the other night, could be something to do with my surround sound, on the other hand was up late as my son turned up at midnight with his girlfriend and was out the front for a while.
The a/c probably approached and took off from the eastern end of the runway in order to avoid the Stansted landing pattern which would mean I wouldn’t have heard them.
10 years ago I lived in a cottage virtually backing on to the quick alert hangers to the north of the airfield, following my mega VE Day party we were treated to a tactical exercise by the 4th AAC.
This lasted nearly a week and started in the early hours of the morning with a convoy of vehicles coming past the house that seemed to go on forever, the next day I was at work but my neighbour told me that Chinooks had been lifting gear over the house.
The whole area was full of troops and Lynx helicopters, all very exciting stuff.
The highlight of the event happened on the saturday morning. For the VE-Day party we put a huge mural on the gable of the house consisting of a front view of a Lancaster flying through a giant V, I was woken by the sound of Lynx helicopters, went outside and a line of 4 were hovering low over my fence pointing at the mural, when I got outside, each helicopter bowed in salute and peeled off, I was quite touched, except my son slept through it all and missed it.
Whereabouts in Sampford do your parents live Adrian, is it the bungalow on the right hand side coming from Finchingfield just before the turn off to the barns ( which I drew up by the way ), it looks to have some interesting sheds, does he charge admission.
Interesting.
Wethersfield became active again this week.
5 x C130 on a tactical landing exercise.

Interesting, can practically see the place from where I’m sitting and have been working at home all week but seen and heard nothing, similarly my missus keeps her horses at one end of the runway and works near the other end but she reported nothing, got any more info.
The last time I looked the runway appeared a bit neglected and the landing lights have a few windfalls, might jump in the car and have a look, petty it’s chucking down with rain.
1977 Silver Jubilee show at White Waltham and ‘THE’ British Airways Vc10 display, something I will never forget. A pic of how low the first pass was Very Low and lets try it with the gear down Lower still
That and the early displays at Greenham, the Canadian Starfighters team were always outstanding, the singleton at high speed from behind the crowd always caught most people out 🙂
I remember the Canadians having a bit of a battle for supremacy with the Luftwaffe starfighters at Mildenhall one year, I think that the Canadian starfighter without tip tanks filling my 50mm lense over the crowd summed it up. I think it might have been the year when the F-15 made a first appearance in Europe, he radioed in on take off from New York at lunch time and appeared over the runway to close the show at about 5:00.
OK Chaps,
Sometimes the internet just ain’t good enough.
For reasons that are far too silly to mention here, I need to find some photos of Home Defence Hurricanes in Canada during WW2. Don’t try trawling the web, been there, done that and seen pretty well all of them (well, what there are) but I am looking for images that may not have been psoted up. Any of you Canadian chappies able to help?
There were about seven home defence squadrons although some of those did get sent to Europe around the time of D Day.
Oh, Spitfire.
That has nothing to do with the thread but if I don’t put it in then some people won’t read it.
Thanks in advance chaps.
Melvyn
Get hold of a copy of ‘Captain of The Clouds’, starring James Cagney, available on VHS from Amazon and featuring colour footage of Hurricane units.
What route to Jersey, will they pass over Finchingfield.
I stand corrected about Conningsby, but had realised this on a recent thread from JDK. The beer by the way was Batemans.
I recall that the spitfire flypast was a bit ragged, passing north to south down the western end of the runway on one pass.
They actually put up 11 F2’s, one had to abort and did the shortest landing I’ve ever seen, plus each pilot did an idiosyncratic take off.
My cortina estate overheated getting into the show, where by coincidence we found ourselves behind my brother and old man from Nottingham, and my pal got sunstroke, we almost diverted to Peterborough hospital on the way home, but a couple of pints of Ruddles at Market Deeping sorted him out. Will have to dig out my slides, had a very nice Canon at the time with a 200-400 telephoto, how much does it cost to get the gear to download slides, and where do I get it from.
Just a note to Moggy, went to the BoB 50th anniversary at Coltishall 1980 when fog put paid to what they hoped was to be the biggest gathering of spitfires and hurricanes for many years. That day saw the supposed first flyby by a Tornado fighter variant, the bomber version was already about, he made a very brief appearance through the clag, in a grey and red colour scheme and covered in ordnance, any body else remember this.
Interesting, have loads of piccies of the Hun through the ages but all on slides including Robs Lamploughs first dodgy flight in what I assume to be G-HUNN at DX many years ago. Best sequence is a vid of Black 6 and Hans Dittes flying with the BBMF at North Weald, also a Junkers 52 firing off a gas gun from the top gunners position, surrounded by Pilatuses and Me108’s at NW.
Whatever happened to the ‘polystyrene’ FW-190, that I recall and photographed flying low over the crowd at Wethersfield about 20 years ago,
Thanks for the info, will try and get to DX tomorrow, why wasn’t Spitfire U-2 visible last sunday, finally to the subsequently disappeared Steve Waugh, Tee-Hee, and why did Brett Lee get so p****d off yesterday, bless him, at least he should survive the old man’s cull.
How many Hastings are left, yesterday was looking at the fuselage of the Hermes at DX and wondering if any spare Hastings bits were available to restore it, then I was looking at the Hastings outside the American hangar and got depressed at it’s condition, not as bad as the Varsity though.
When I took my father to the D-Day show last year, he was treated like royalty, despite the fact that he was ex Royal Artillery rather than aircrew, and this was both from the DX people as well as the general public.
Had the old boy still been alive we probably would have gone to the airshow yesterday, although he would have been 88 this year, he was such a charmer and clever upholder of his rights, that we would probably have ended up in the control tower, bless him.
Probably would have succesfully demanded his money back as well.
