Pete TrumanI used to go to Cleethorpes every Easter in the 50’s/60’s on an excursion train from either Edwinstowe or Nottingham Midland, loco exchange at the old London Road station, but I don’t recall flights off the beach.
I remember the offshore fort with it’s battery of 25 pounders and friendly gun crews, what happened to that.
Pity the old man wasn’t still around, he would know.

Pete TrumanAs with many things in life it is the negative aspects that get the headlines.The youth of today are mostly far better behaved than those of 50 yeas ago.It only takes small numbers with an eye for seeking publicity to give an entirely incorrect perception.
I agree, my natural son is at Uni, he hasn’t got a bad bone in his body, everyone loves him, he’s never been a problem, apart from some dope smoking incidents that he at least was prepared to admit and talk about without any prompting. All his mates and associates are fantastic, friendly, lovely kids. Even some of the bad guys that were around when he was younger have always been approachable and we’ve remained good pals, it’s all down to attitude on both sides.
Now I’m an old git with a young partner, she’s 34 and I’m 56, her son is 13, in theory I could be his grandad, but fortunatley, he doesn’t see it that way and we are right good old mates.
He’s far older than his years and a right Goth, but so are all his mates, and a real good bunch they are too.
I’ve been very involved with kids for the last 20 years, I used to be a Scout leader, but this is where the buck stops.
The kids coming up into scouts 5 years ago were awfull, all they wanted to do was play football, no interest in anything else.
In the end me and my mate packed it in, mind you, a few Health and Safety issues involving these W##### put an end to it all, we were’nt prepared to be sued by a load of rebrobate, middle class parents who couldn’t understand that their kids were’nt perfect, being hauled up into tribunals by these so called principled a#######s was not much fun.
Sad, I loved being involved with the scouts, and I really miss the adventures we used to have and I’m getting a bit twitchy, especially when it’s the 100th anniversary of scouting this year, take the p### if you like, there must be some decent scouts out there though.

Pete TrumanOops, how could I have forgotten him, yes I’ll go along with that one, could be even more impressive if he did the commentary from a displaying 2 seater, especially if flown by one of the women pilots.

To me it did’nt enhance the superb flying by the pilots just made the crowd take the pee.:)

That must have been at Air Fete 97, and I agree, we were beside ourselves at the ridiculousness of it all, but the Yanks like a bit of a show, bless them.
The problem with the flying is the use of high performance jets like the F-16, fast, furious, close, noisy and exciting it may be, but the slower more agile trainers that the Reds, Patrouille and Frecces use mean a constant presence in the sky infront of you.
The worst ever aircraft used for a display team must have been the Phantoms by the Blue Angels in the 70’s, I saw them at Hucknall in 72 and impressive though it may have been, the Reds, who followed, using Gnats in those days, just aerobatically blew them away.
Anyway, it’s rare to see the Thunderbirds and for those who haven’t, definately worth seeing, perhaps they should get the Frecces man to do the commentary, now that would be some combination, we love him.

Sorry, I think that Pirates of the Carribean is awful, apart from wanting to see the dubious acting talents of Keith Richards, I have no interest in this overblown Hollywood rubbish, I prefered Johnny Depp with those funny hands, now THATS a good film.

and walking what seemed like miles in those days but probably now’t compared to RIAT.
I think I also remember seeing a real Fulton recovery system demo from the ARRS based at Woodbridge but maybe my memory is playing up..

What was the incident with the Frecces, are you not confusing it with Ramstein.
I had just got in and was just about as close as you could get when the T-34 went in, what was so horrible was that the aircrews wives were watching from the tower, coupled with the fact that the bodies were removed in full view of the crowd.
On a lighter note, I remember the Canadian Starfighters coming over the crowd, I’m sure it was a 3 ship, the leader not having wingtanks, it filled the lens of my Zenit.
They seemed to be having a competition that day with the Luftwaffe F-104’s to see who could fly the closest, lowest and fastest, the Canadians won it with a close low pass at almost Mach 1.
I only had trouble getting in on my first visit, not being wise to the event, we ended up being routed all over the place, ending up being sent across the eastern end of the runway, that was fine, except that the inevitable first item, the KC-135, just happened to land over the top of the car, an experience not for the faint hearted.
I remember the Victor trailling Kerosene, it landed in a cloud of the stuff too, we thought it was about to detonate, similarly the first time you see a tail high take off of a B-52, it’s pretty hairy.
When the F-14 displayed, and I reckon it was 92, there was quite a Naval contingent that year. We were invited on board the transport version of the EC-3, on asking why all the seats faced backwards, we were told that it enhanced the survival rate if it fell off a carrier, nice.

Pete TrumanThe Cat flew back from Southend late yesterday, I was in the loft and couldn’t get down the ladder quick enough to see it, unmistakeble sound of those engines and it must have been very low.
