Just checked to see if XV181 still survives and she does with the Austrians. XV181 performed the last RAF mission of the 20th Century. Photographic sortie to Scilly Isles to provide platform for live pictures of the last sunset for the BBC Millennium Live Programme. Took off from Lyneham 14.00 back by 17.30. Gp Capt Bullen in command.

Hi Anon the building in question is behind the monogrammed gates as you come into Dock Road from the High Street. At the alleyway to the left of Willprint. You can see the gates on Google Streetview.

Greetings Anon I think it was myself who mentioned the North Wales garage roof. The garage building is at the top of Dock Road Connah’s Quay and the parts look to me similar to Caudron G.111 tail booms. The type was used as a trainer at RAF Shotwick [ later RAF Sealand ] just up the road and may have come from there. They’ve been forming the roof for a long time and markings could still be seen, along with rigging wire stubs. Last time I looked, a couple of months ago, the building was still there. I’m sure the garage owner wouldn’t mind someone visiting with a camera and tape measure !

Those are extraordinary pictures. The aeroplane seems to be wearing an overall RLM Grau 02 scheme. Interesting that the fuselage appears to have lost most of its fabric. I wonder why? That depth is seriously mixed gas territory too ! Any sign of a werke nummer ? Unit ?

Gentlemen, thankyou all for informing us of what survives out there. Most of us rely on sites such as Preserved Axis Aircraft to find out what still exists.

Its interesting to see the actual film rushes that were shot but not used in the film appear from time to time in other productions. First Light, Fighting The Blue, Dark Blue World amongst others have used sequences that were filmed but never incorporated into the 1968 production. The Dark Blue World shots have actually been enhanced with some animated cartridge cases flying about. I wonder who actually owns these unused sequences? They’re certainly making more money now then they did lying on the cutting room floor !

Well done Falcon 109- I’d buy the 109 theory. The first shot in your selection shows the aircraft over the Muritz zee. All we need to do now is id the camera ship !

So a quick look at Google maps shows the ‘Autobahn’ feature to actually be a canal, and the ‘coast’ to be the shore of Muritz see, with the Spitfire and 109 overhead Rechlin-Larz. Anyone been to the airfield? Some interesting features to see…

Examination of other shots in the sequence show the sortie apparently heading over the coast, away from that nasty storm behind them in the photos we see here. The 109 appears to be an E4 with partial stammkenzeichen visible +EO and some applied mottle but no unit markings. Way below we can see a stretch of autobahn heading towards the lake area…would be great to know the location !
