A similar case occurred with a Mustang lost in Sussex. The pilot, a chap called Penman, was killed and I had local records that showed he was sent back home for burial in Scotland by his family. A colleague, many years ago, applied for a licence to recover the aircraft but was declined a licence because the pilot was still missing! Indeed, if you check you will find his name at Runnymede. I did some further delving and found that Penman was certainly buried in Scotland. I obtained reports from the Cemetery Superintendent and even a newspaper report about his funeral in 1943. It was only last year that I managed to convince the MOD/CWGC that the records were wrong and they have ammended them accordingly. So far as I know nobody has ever re-applied for a licence relative to the Mustang.
Just a question Me-109E. If you do carry out excavations at the sites you mention, and if you truly believe there are missing men there, what are your intentions? What are your plans for the conduct of the recoveries etc? You could be entering a bit of a minefield – licence or not. What about next of kin? Have you traced them and what are their feelings? Lots to consider here. Things are no longer the way they were back in the 1970’s with “digs” on such sites.

I have been gathering as much information as possible on crash sites where the MOD has granted permission to excavate knowing crew may still reside at the site, I have used these cases to try and sway the MOD to obtain a licence for one site in particular, the site in question was tampered with in 2001, I made the MOD aware of this and even had a trip to site with them to show evidence of this!, they even asked me what the wreckage looked like and they took a small piece away for their file!
The site in question has two airmen listed as missing, both being named at Runnymede.
One crewmen is of the RCAF and the other a RAFVR
How does one trace a relaitive of a RAFVR airmen? I have the name of his wife, maybe persuing her might yeild something?, help on this matter would be most appreciated.
It comes down to this, the site is under threat and I am trying to act as fast as possible to excavate the site before it is lost and give the individuals the funeral they deserve (if they are indeed at the site), and commerate the site with a plaque close by.
And wreckage recovered will be donated to a project
Urban Dictionary records snyde as being Clearly inferior in both intellectual and physical endeavor. Therefore, I rather suspect you mean snide?

1) You now have details from Galland26 as to where the dates come from. I know these to be verifiable and beyond any doubt.
2) Only you can go through your feedback as it has not gone unoticed that you have elected to have this as “private” and not viewable by other e-bayers.
3) The items I am talking about comprise a very long list. For starters a Me 109 canopy, sans histoire, that subsequently acquired a history. Several forum members can testify on this.
4) Me 109 bomb rack that could not and did not originate from the aircraft it is claimed to be from.
5) I understand a number of buyers have had issues with you and raised queries – not least of all the problem with the Do17/Me109 item. When sent the proof of the link you failed to respond to that buyer on e-bay.
6) A number of items that came through my hands from Craig Charleston (ex Peter Foote collection) I did sell to you in the autumn of 2001. A good number of these items have since turned up with “histories” they did not have when they left me! I also objected, strongly, to the use of my name in your e-bay listings whereby you tried to attach some credibility to the item description/histories.
Finally, I have been contacted by others concerned about a B-24 fin. I would urge you to deal with that issue before it gets rather more serious. Just a bit of advice, Nick, that you would do well to heed.
So….if you didn’t repaint the Dornier skin, who did? Unless I have misunderstood this, it came to you without the swastika section but when you tried to sell it the swastika section was there. Or have I got this totally wrong?
1. Galland26 has not contacted me about these dates… would really like to know where he got them from.
2. Correct Feedback is now private, this has nothing to do with this thread.
3. After I obtained the 109 canopy, a member on this forum, advised me of it’s history, this i took as the truth (wish i hadn’t now!) please do email this so called long list of issues people have with me.
4. As i explained to eBay member ‘zoe338’, I bought it from an aerojumble with the said history attached.
5. I have always responded to eBayers questions.
6.I bought the items off of you in April 2002, and yes a vast majority of the items had no history, any items I sold were only the items with history as attached to the labels, again I should not have mentioned your name when I sold items recently on eBay even though the items DID COME FROM YOU.
The B-24 tail fin issue will be resolved, this issue is between me and Devon Aircraft Research and Recovery Team.
I bought the Dornier items 4 or 5 years ago now and no the piece had no Swastika painted on it.
I sold these items last year and as far as I am concerned they left me in an original un tampered state.
I read this thread yesterday with great concern
First off I bought a Dornier 17P crankshaft from an ebay member about 4/5 years ago now and the seller also sent me a small box of items containing a piece of skin that is the the piece in question now.( All items being fron the 1939 Dornier)
I would like to know where the dates June 23 2008 have come from, as I purchased the said items 4 or 5 years ago!, I have been going through my records since reading this thread and have been trying my hardest to locate the eBay seller who sold them to me.
I have an idea who it was, just going through my feedback to track the seller down!
I would also like to say in response to Tangmere’s comment:
‘Unfortunately this particular seller does have a bit of a track record in selling things which purport to be what they are not. I’d say it was becoming a bit of a habbit.’
Exactly what things are you talking about?
I would urge anybody who has had dealings with me to get intouch so to resolve any issues.
I can say I DID NOT alter the piece of Dornier skin
I have no issue with you saying that these items were from the late Peter Foote’s collection.
Just a bit concerned to find my name being used by another seller with a kind of inference that there was some verification there of the provenance, or that I might verify it. In fact, I even had two e-mails from other people who thought your e-bay identity was really me. The final straw was getting an e mail from another e-bayer saying that you had suggested, to him, contacting me to get verification of provenance.
I would add that I do not remember the history being known on some of the items, but it may be my memory.
Thank you for offering to edit the listings.
I was contacted by a prospective buyer during the week asking if you could verify that i obtained one of the items from you, my response was that you MAY be able to verify provenance, I never suggested that he contact you, thats for sure.
again sorry
as for History of the items, i have listed exactly what was and is written on the labels.
Well, thats interesting! Thanks for the heads up on this junk collector!! I sold a large quantity of the late Peter Foote’s collection to a chap in Cornwall some few years ago – and this is some of it. Much of it had no provenance apart from those items with Peter’s tie on labels which are very distinctive. His handwriting, type of label and ties (usually waxed green string) are unmistakable. Some of these can be seen here. Some of the tie on labels, though, are not his. However, there must have been a good two tons of other German aircraft bits with no known history and I am slightly concerned to note that much now seems to have a provenance. Worse, I am concerned that I am kind of being used, in a sense, by an e-bay seller to “validate” the provenance on some of these items!!! I cannot verify or put my name to these and am a bit miffed that an e-bay seller is using my name in this way.
In fact, for the avoidance of any doubt here, I am NOT willing to put my name, by way of provenance, on any item being sold by a third party. I doubt that anyone would want to. The implication in the lots being offered for sale is that some kind of credibility is being given to the provenance by way of association with me. Maybe I ought to be flattered. I’m not. I’m annoyed! All I am prepared to say is that the items (probably) came via me. I am not under any circumstances prepared to offer any verification to the histories that are applied to the items being sold.
You are correct in saying some of the labels are not Peter Footes, the bright yellow labels are ones I have attached in place of the original ones, this is due to the fact they were old and the writing was getting hard to read.
As for the other ‘two tons’ that I still have….. I have not made up any provenance and attached it to unknown items that I aquired from you, and then sold the said items on eBay.
All I can say is that the items with your name mentioned against them on eBay DID come from you in 2002.
Sorry to have annoyed you.

I’m the chap in Cornwall
I obtained these items off of you in 2002, sorry to have annoyed you andy, I will edit the listing’s now and remove any reference to you or Peter Foote.
again sorry to make you Miffed 🙁
No, that is Oblt Bartels Me 109 of II/JG26 which was downed on 24 July 1940 near Margate and is seen here on display at Croydon. This was a postcard sold to raise funds for Spitfire fund. An NFS fireman, a Mr Solly, was fined £5 for removing a pistol from the cockpit. But that wasn’t all that was stolen from it…..!
WOW!:)
A few pics from a brief visit into Dx today.. would of been more but my digital camera stopped playing ball.
Also noted was the F15 in the spray shop, Spitfire MH434 up on jacks with her wheels off and F6 Hellcat outside having engine runs to name but a few.;)
great pics, beaufighter is looking good 🙂
As an ex-serviceman my views are this:
If a site is known to have human remains then it should be the duty of the state to ensure the aircrew are recovered and given full military burials regardless of expense. And let’s face it the only reason so many are still ‘missing’ is because it’s more convenient for governments of all political persuasions to save money by pretending they a somehow honouring them by letting them rot unmarked and alone. If it had all gone for hell in a handcart for me I would rather have been recovered and buried with my mates than left forgotten. Check out the Commonwealth War Graves site in Berlin where the crews are buried in sevens.
Thats exactly what I was trying to point out, point out known sites to the so called professionals and let us ‘amateurs’ watch close by
And in doing so honour our war dead instead of lying in an unmarked grave forever
Act should be changed
I think the 1986 Protection of Military Remains act has done one thing, and that is to make sure that lost servicemen remain just that…………LOST
Enthusiasts have taken time speaking to eye witnesses (who are becomming harder to find) and have spent much time locating these aircraft crash sites
Shouldn’t we all start a petition to have the ACT changed to allow all of us enthusiasts show where these aircraft have crashed and excavate and give the Heroes of this country the respect they deserve?
Or maybe since they gave their life for QUEEN and Country the present Queen should return the favour to aircrew’s family and allow recovery’s to take place so our war dead can be remembered properly instead of lying in unmarked graves???
The Americans recover their fallen war dead………why can’t we……
For an excellent “as found” museum display aircraft, look no further than the P-40 recovered from the beach at Anzio, Italy that was discussed recently on this forum (I don’t have the link to that discussion, but here is the link to a pic:
Looks in great condition!!:)
