PM me – there was a view in an old Issue of Sacel Aircraft Modelling, and I have a few pictures in various publications
Only the 109 – although I beleive a relic of the Hs129 (Canopy frame?) still exists
I’m sure it all makes perfect sense to someone in Whitehall…. take away the Navy’s dedicated purpose built Sea Harriers (which still had a good few years life in them)… and give them some old RAF Harriers which happen to be surplus to requirements…… but are somewhat well used……
yeah, but having to dump Amraams because you don’t have the thrust weight ratio to land back onboard in hot conditions does tend to po the bean counters
There were quite a few – 601 Squadron had a Stuka coded UFo?, and there was an ex-Italian Ju87B,
4 SAAF had a 109F coded KJ o?
The only gossip I’ve ever come across about Mig 15s and Suez was that bits or a whole one was captured and brought back to Cyprus (and possibly on to Farnborough)
Was it not a hostage rescue operation for the female soldier that was captured in Iraq?
I’m also sure one of teh airfields was secured by a para drop
What happened to Sheffield Airport alongside the M1 – seems to have disappeared off the schedules?
Saw the Jags today, took off right over the top if the car at about 9.45
King Air, Tucano, Griffin, Squirrel.
Lancaster, DC3, Spitfire, Hurricane 😀
Domine, BAE 146, Nimrod, Sentry, Sentinel R1, A109 Power, Airbus A400M in the future 🙂
Oh, and Predator UAVs
6. There is strong circumstantial and hearsay evidence that a Tornado F3 CAP was ordered off prosecuting a contact with two Mirage F1s by the orbiting AWACs during Op Desert Storm to allow a Saudi F-15 pilot to destroy them.
.
Heresay pointed to ALL non-US aircraft being ordered off or not directed in favour of US aircraft, with the exception of the ‘propaganda’ Saudi kill (and then, to an F0-15 alleged to be heavily escorted by USAF aircraft just in case)
So much for 39 Sqn ‘only having one operational aircraft left’. Now which magazine said that………. 🙂
Aaaaargh, and I’m going down there tomorrow!
The last ‘official’ shoot down in combat by an RAF aircraft was an Egyptian Spitfire in 1948.
There are, however, rumours of ‘unofficial’ or ‘unconfirmed’ shootdowns. Three which surface from time to time:
(i) Hunter vs Yemen Mig15/17 – During the Oman squabbles in the late 60s, Yemen Migs would attack sites in Oman. RAF Hunters were sent to intercept, but were not allowed to pursue the MIgs back across the border. there are confirmed reports (Which were published in Flypast IIRC) of Hunters achieving gun strikes on the MIgs, but no confirmation of whether the MIgs made it back to base or not.
(ii) Javelins in Indonesia – There is one case where it is reported that ‘manopuvering’ by a Javelin caused an Indonesian Hercules (or was it a Badger?) to crash. However, there are also dark rumours of a/the Javelin returning to base with a ‘missing’ Firestreak.
(iii) There are also rumours about an RAF Phantom shooting down a USAF Hercules that had been ‘hijacked’ by a malcontent NCO
There are a few out there, but the Sea Eagle wasn’t carried that often, and was withdrawn in the late 90s. There are photos of early trials aircraft as above, and a few publicity shots with drill rounds
I’ve only seen one photo of an FA2 with Sea Eagle
Needless to say Theft of Copyright is not only a civil offence under The Copyright, Designs & Patents Act 1988, 🙂
Breach of copyright is also a criminal offence (S.400 IIRC)
