Indeed it did Fouga, identified as the AEW.1 ‘Airborne Early Warning’ variant, replacing the Avenger and superseded by the Gannet in Royal Navy service. It also acted as a COD ‘Carrier On-board Delivery’ aircraft for post and replacement pilots etc

FAA Avengers weren’t AEW airframes, AS and later ECM trainers

Not sure about a Puma, but a yellow ASR Wessex parked in the static display definitely fired up and headed over to the scene of the accident over the other side of the airfield.

Possibly both went, I think I can recall both firing up – I have photos somewhere – one of the ground crew said they were on casevac standby, as was the US DC-9 Nightingale at the far end (Found out later that it allegedly would have taken casualties to Glasgow if needed)

I was beside the Support helicopter static at the time (Back at the car to get some lunch) – aside from getting a dent in the roof where I stood up to have a better look, the thing I remember most was at least one (Wessex?) powering up and deploying across the airfield.

Many thanks for the replies. I had thought they were largely black as in the attached (apologies to the photographer, I have no idea whose picture it is) which I think is a Mk XVIII. Any more thoughts or photos would be most welcome!

The photo in the Britmodeller thread certainly suggests medium Sea Grey over Black

I would imagine that they were silver with yellow bands just like the T10

    It would appear not

Not to mention the Australian Hampden or the Bicester example that were scrapped in the mid fifties.
Where is that timemachine when you need it.

War Prizes makes you weep when you read of all the stuff that was stored for future museum use but then scrapped because space was needed or similar

Nice, later than 40/41 though – 1942 I’d say from the presence of ‘Black 6’ at 1:09

Plus there were (apparently) a large number of preserved airframes, mostly Japanese I believe, stored in America that were scrapped during the Korean war because the space they occupied was needed – anyone know what was there?

I’d recommend getting a look at a copy of Phil Butler’s ‘War Prizes’ for details of Axis aircraft that were in storage after WW2 but were later scrapped. It’s 20 years old but still pretty definitive. Both in the US and also the UK. There was quite a lot that was scrapped that now makes you go “NOOOOOO!”.

With regard to WW1, there were still a few German aircraft in the UK experimental establishments into the early 20s, although not many in flyable condition (Junkers fighter at Martelsham springs to mind). The Junkers mentioned in the original post was a J1 if I recall, and was pretty much a wreck. Several Fokker DVIIs were flown at air days in the immediate post war period as well. I don’t know of a single source reference to these ‘war prizes’.

XH591 was converted to a K1A then struck off charge in 1976 and scrapped in 1978

There is a lot of indignant hot air on this thread.

I take it none of you has ever been involved in a multi-agency investigation or prosecution? That’s one where there are two or more agencies investigating a particular incident or circumstance. I have. You take each agencies strengths and weaknesses and you use those to develop the investigation to establish the facts. It might be in the end the prosecution is submitted by one particular agency (and not the obvious one) because the powers and duties of enforcement rest best with that agency.

Can the CAA prosecute beyond the remit of their own legislation? Offhand, I don’t know, but if not, and there appears to be breaches of relevant legislation, then you need some one that can, and has powers to investigate those suspected offences. In this case, that may be the Police. The Police also have excellent investigatory and evidence gathering experience that they can bring to such a large investigation.

Now, even if one agency takes the lead in a particular area of investigation, it doesn’t exclude the others. I personally have sat in an interview with officers from Police or Customs or other agencies. Most investigatory powers allow the investogator to take such other persons as required. So in this case they might say ‘I’m DCI Plodd, and my colleague here Mr Wings is from the CAA, we are going to ask you some questions’.

You bring in the experts you need.

The Soviets copied them and of course a batch was sold by the UK to the Shah’s Imperial Navy. The smaller SRN6 often provided a “fun” crossing to the Isle of Wight, I recall!!

How many people will now even know Christopher Cockerill’s name?:apologetic:

The Royal Navy/Royal Marines still use hovercraft – operationally they were used in 2003 in Iraq. Current model is Griffon 2400TD based, replacing the older 2000TD models

Seems to me like this a golden opportunity to re-launch the Bob collection as a slightly leaner collection of aircraft in a much more modern setting, perhaps with a dedicated subsection for the France/Low Countries campaigns which seem a bit forgotten. How about a brand new display with the Ju87, Gladiator, Battle, and Stuka? (you could swap the Blenheim back to the Bomber Hall in its place)
As others have said the Bf110 would look stunning sat menacingly next to the Lancaster. I’d also suggest you relocate the CR42 to a new Desert/Middle East/Med display, get shot of the rather superfluous Jungmeister, and just leave a core collection of the RAF fighters, He11, Ju88 and Bf109. The Hurricane wreck, which is rather tucked away, could be used to stunning effect in the entrance…

But is this CR42 not as much, if not more so, a BoB airframe than a Desert one?

Have we, air show goers and the air display sector generally, had it cheap since 1972 (the date noted above) and are we now only being asked to pay our fair share?

One of their rationales for the size of the increased charges is that they are making up for a shortfall in cost recovery in previous years.
