The UK A-20 is absolutely – absolutely – stunning.

Don’t write off the Vincent yet 😉

I suppose that RAF report is 2 years old now….

Yes, Steve (not Ray) Milnthorpe’s project is much more, now, than just a nose section. His track record with another aircraft is encouraging.

Be good to see, especially after the sad tale of Z2186.

I’d be pleased to see a DB7/A20 of any sort in the UK, although I agree they should be in original markings rather than ‘fake’ ones. A composite airframe is another matter!

The wider question is one of ‘What happened to Precision Aerospace at Wangaratta?’

Following family tragedy surrounding the owners, I suspect the deal became un-doable.

Indeed, I wondered if that was the reason

Not all deals go as planned, are we any nearer seeing the arrival of the Havoc which I believe was part of the previous Spitfire swap ?

If you go back to August, there was a minute of the Disposals committee which suggeste dthe Havoc swap did not go ahead. Note that RW393 is now at Hendon

    http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/documents/freedom_of_information/A_and_D_Meeting_summaries/October_to_December_2012_A_and_D_Committee.pdf

These minutes don’t appear to be linked on the RAFM website anymore

But as it is the RAF Museum who took the gamble and lost, they end up getting a public kicking.

They end up getting the kicking because their PR on this has been terrible – we had Kennet doing talks about the recovery and receiving the mk 22 without a word from the RAFM, the first official confirmation that they had anything to do with the P-40 was the planning application to convert the theatre. Then sometime later a little piece in the 13/14 Annual Report and then when the disposals committee minutes were put online last August

The information that Mark12 gives above has never been in the public domain until now as far as I’m aware. It does cast a new light on these aspects of the affair.

I have no objection to the RAFM swapping a Spitfire for the services rendered to retreive the P-40 from the Desert (In the past, RAF crash and smash would probably have done it, but that would not have been possible politically here even if the service was still available to RAFM).

Where it seems criticism can be made is in not securing that they then had title to the P-40 – at the very least it would then mean that they would have a legal claim to title if the P-40 was then sold on to someone else.

For what it is worth there are reports from a couple of sources, unconfirmed in any way, that the P40 container is no longer in the Middle East – but is now in the US.

    Moggy

If that turns out to be true, no wonder heads rolled at RAFM

Perhaps they should call it something snappy like ‘Eurocopter’… 😀

    .

I suppose that one is out of use at the moment……

British Aerospace didn’t have too many original designs either….

IIRC there were ‘pink’ trials earlier (Pre GUlf War) where they painted a couple of C-130s in different schemes, out in Cyprus.

This suggests that Duncan’s shots were taken in late 92:

38+48 has now been allocated her UK military serial number ZK848. Lets hope that Hunter aviation get some MOD contracts and she gets some airtime.

There was a rumour that she may have some contract work in Germany

As MOSI is no longer a stand alone Museum, but part of the Science Museum family, I would like to think any exhibits that were not returned to owners would go to Wroughton or their other stores.

I’d love to see the Shack at East Fortune (After all, they apparently turned down the chance to obtain one in 1991 in the hope it would mean one would remain flying) but I’m not sure they would have the under cover space at present.

You have good eyes, I could only see it from three feet and only then with the light in the right place.
For anyone lost as to what we are on about, the serial on this ex Argentinian A109 is painted in black on a (very) dark grey surface.

On a couple it was actually applied with clear tape – just visible below the red stripe on the cockpit door here: http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/3/5/8/0609853.jpg

Its of more relevance to Middle Wallop than the Bermuda its a canopy off a Hamilcar.

    Of course it is! doh!

Back to the subjects of secrets, the object under the blue tarpaulin is prohibited by the Director of Special Forces from being put on public display but all the spotters know what it is.

And the FAAM have put theirs on display, haven’t they?

Left field question, but what’s the canopy on the right hand side? Bermuda?
