Well done to all – I was watching with my heart in my mouth and my fingers crossed as it was dangling from the crane for what seemed like forever. Memories of the Norwegian Fw200 lift kept running through my head!! (BTW, very little on that on the net that I could find!)
Alan, thanks for the link. I’ll have a read. Its location is fairly isolated, and anything found will be given to a local museum. We’re primarily interested in trying to identify the aircraft and find out if there were casualties. Posting the location on a public forum could encourage relic hunters, which is the last thing anyone wants.
Peppermint_jam, the most important part to read is:
It is an offence under this Act to tamper with, damage, move or unearth any
remains which come within the scope of the Ac
t unless the Secretary of State has issued
a Licence authorising such things to be done, and they are done in accordance with the
conditions of the Licence.
Naive / optimistic view of public interest in Olympic mascots looked like a major contributor to their woes over the year – see: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/business/industries/retailing/article3548825.ece
Not just the mascots but a whole range of Olympic souvenirs – mini Olympic torches for example – for whatever reason, the demans just wasn’t there (IMO theys et their price point too high for many of them)
The problem is, by not reporting (and literally covering up) the nature of the previous grafitti, they then leave open the assumption that any further ‘not rrevealed’ grafitti is of a similar nature.
I can understand perhaps the reasons why they didn’t do so, but wonder if it was the right decision?
Ijn the end, it’s all about an appalling lack of respect, like those who litter or urinate on war memorials.
The Beau is an important aircraft type for Scotland isn’t it? I always wondered why they would pull out all the stops to acquire
it, and then put it in storage. I know, save now and restore later but does that make sense in this particular case?
Wouldn’t a Beaufighter be a crowdpuller for any museum?Cees
The biggest factor was a change in curator (and collecting policy) not long after the Beau was acquired. Adam Smith, who was instrumental in getting her, left to go to the EAA at Oshkosh and the new curator did not have an aircraft background. I always got the impression that military aircraft did not find favour for a while after that (albeit that has changed as recent additions have shown)
Then Concorde changed all priorities.
I bet Farnborough would have. Mind you, they may well have destroyed these as well due to lack of interest. I remember that most airworthy Lancs finished up at Tarrant Rushton and used on the Berlin Airlift. After which they were broken up for scrap using excavators, very sad sight according to an eye witness. They only realized just in time that they should keep one for old times sake. Hence the BBMF City of Lincoln still flying today.
The Lancaster remained in RAF service long after the Berlin Airlift, into the early 50s in the GR3 maritime recce or PR3 versions. PA474 was in RAF service until 1952, when she went to Flight Refuelling then the College of Aeronautics
There was a lot held in storage after the War for Museum purposes that was scrapped in the late 40s/early 50s
Thank you. And, absolutely none- their only remaining weapon is the ‘family wishes’ angle, which they seem able to have swayed their way now. That, and a repeated intent from the principal opponent to tell the media when we run the boat that Campbell’s head is still in the lake, which fact alone kind of shows you the type of people we have to deal with…
Seems strange, I thought the Campbell family were right behind you. Especially reading this: http://ginacampbellqso.com/rebuilding-k7/
What is the opponent’s angle/interest in this?
Vote left!
I think most of the members posting on this thread are of similar views on the subject of finding and recovering Sgt Dennis Copping’s remains. …
Thanks for that explanation – I think what frustrates many of us in the UK is that the UK Govt’s starting policy is one of opposing recovery/repatriation in most cases, against the US one of recovery whereever possible
Is this ‘cos RAFM’s got a better on now? :diablo:
There is a little more out there – not least that the Luscombe appears to have carried two colour schemes – or there were two of them.
Excellent news – one day I will make it down on a day when you are open, rather than just looking through the fence! (Must persuade my customers to change their work days!)
The response to my appeal for contacts with veterans for my forthcoming Wellington book has been tremendous – thanks everyone. I still have a few gaps:
DW.I – anyone out there?
Transport ops – ditto
French Navy
75(NZ) SqnThanks as always

DWI – still trying to chase up my scatty aunt-in-law!
Wear it with pride Tim. My mum has just completed the form to apply for my grandfather’s medal (Merchant Navy)
IIRC there are some pics of the mock up in existence, need to check Tony Buttler’s book on Bombers.
