In view of the MOD’s previous on recovering the remains of fallen servicemen, it saddens but does not surprise me. I suppose an opposite, more charitable view, might be that they were attempting to distract attention from the remains to enable their quiet recovery.

I might also add that, in my view, it is unfortunate that the RAFM did not visit or recover the reported remains whilst recently there to recover the P40.

    Giving something away there Andy!

Be interesting to have a poke around that Spitfire!

For those who don’t know, IWM Lambeth is also the remaining parts of the origiinal ‘Bedlam’ Asylum.

I may be confusing my Defenders with my Islanders.

    You and the MOD!

The Army (and RAF) Islanders are equivalent to the BN Defender, the Army’s Defenders are Defender 4000 equivalents!

Looks like a Nimrod nose – the Comet didn’t have the ‘eyebrow’ windows.

There were a few Nimrods scrapped at Woodford over the years (e.g.XV257)

No complaints at all re the MOD License, in fact I was impressed with the turn around.

I’d imagine the fact that there was no aircrew and no ammunition would have helped that considerably.

The law of unintended consequences. No-one ever intended that the DPA would apply to 70 year old military records but the way it was drafted means it does. There is a Human Rights Act angle as well (Right to privacy).

I presume the 150 year closure time relates to National Security or Royal Family issues?

IIRC there was a picture in Flypast many years ago of a pile of Hawker Hunters which I thnik was at Coleys. Also visible were several TSR2 fuselages.

Looking at the number, and the other items on the sheet, I’d say the first number is neither a ‘5’ nor an ‘S’ but a ‘3’.

There are no 5s to compare with, but compared to the Ss, the style is different, but the lower half is very similar to the threes.

I knew that hand writing analysis course would come in useful someday!

It’s not mentioned in either the Captive Luftwaffe or War Prizes.

It’s not one of those that the RAF test flew, nor is it the one that was displayed statically in a hanger at Farnborough in October 1945, which suggests the fact is appears on a crash log may be significant.

These would be the Spitfires that were seriously shredded by Hunter cannon fire in a well known film?

It’s no different in the art world. Some of the world’s greatest paintings, sculptures and historical artifacts will never again be seen by the public. Hard to say why such collectors value such privacy..

For many, it’s precisely that no-one else but them, and those they choose, can see the articles.
