Possibly, the detail on the crown looks different

    Jordan might be a possibility

Depends on the time period – it wasat one point called Aluminium, and at another High Speed Silver. Can’t recall which came first, and my refs are at home.

It would have had a AirMin/MOS paint code, but I don’t recall it being in one of the other official standards. When polyurethane aircraft paints came in, they couldn’t do a PU metallic paint, so it was replaced with Light Aircraft Grey.

    I’ll check.

Aren’t they all RAF buttons, just different timescales, hence the different crowns?

Cosford also has a Mig-15, as does East Fortune and I think there is one at The Norfolk & Suffolk Museum

This single seater is coded DV + C-P, could these be the initials of a double barrelled officer? It is my favourite shot in the collection!

Very nice, a new one to me! Do you mind if I share this on the Luftwaffe Experten Forum?

The crash was definitely November 87,

The aircraft & pilots were from 3 Squadron.

I checked out all three last weekend, they are all still there. ‘AJ’ was accessible if you were prepared to make the effort 😉

Not with a 6 year old in tow!!

XV586 is the gate guard is it not still there? it is not really on the gate though by its whereabouts on google earth.

The other Phantom at Leuchars is ‘Black mike’ XV582 which is in 111 markings and is another FG.mk1 like 586.

    curlyboy

XT864 is the Gate Guard, at the main gate along with a Tornado F3. 43 and 111 had their own ‘pet’ Phantoms, XV582 and XV586 (indeed there was a rumour 586 was returned to Leuchars for 43 after 111 said they were keeping Black Mike)

XV586 still stands guard over the former 43Sqn complex. If this squadron stands up again at Leuchars I guess this airframe has many years left at the base. As for the Lightning XR713, she is also doing her duty guarding the 111Sqn HAS complex.

Thanks. Haven’t heard yet if 6 are taking over either HAS site, so that may affect the future of all 5 historic aircraft when 111 go next year.

XR713 had a sign on her saying ‘For Sale, apply CO 111 Sqn’ a few years back at the Airshow!!

The Fw190 might be the one used by 41 Squadron and coded ‘EB – ?’. Most of the other Fw190s listed as being usd by the RAF at Kastrup were twin seaters. Sure I’ve seen a photo of it somewhere, but it isn’t to hand.

Anyone know the current status of XV586 at Leuchars? Saw the other two at the recent airshow, but not the 43 Sqn one, nor indeed 111’s Lightning (Is it still at the squadron HAS?)

The reason I asked is, beyond a study which appears to be in excess of 20 years ago no-one appears to have looked at the possibility of new build Harriers for a while, and it seems timely to look at it again. …….For example if the USMC was to accept that they will not get F-35B’s in service by 2012 they could order a small number of new Harriers to replace some of the older Harriers reaching the end of their service lives, likewise if UK follows the “road map” as laid out in the editorial on Navy
    .

The sheer cost of restarting Harrier production would rule that out surely? Having to re-establish one, let alone two, production facilities, order long-lead time items, produced in a much smaller production batch than originally and re-skill the workforce would make a small batch prohibitively expensive, let alone any ‘improvements’ in technology since the 90s.

The Sea Harrier died because upgrading it to do what we needed it to do in the 2010s was too expensive; A replacement batch of Harriers would be even more so. It’s a niche aircraft, that’s why it didn’t have a great export sales in the first place.

Re the nuclear deterrent. No-body ever mentions the elephant in the room – the Uk will maintain an independent nuclear deterrent as long as FRANCE does the same. There is no way UK politicos will allow the French to be the only uclear country in the EU. Indeed, the other EU countries would not be too keen on that either.
