Turkey May Buy Up to 116 F-35s: Defense Minister

ANKARA- Turkey’s Air Force may buy up to 116 F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Lightning II aircraft, the NATO ally’s defense minister has said.

Turkey, a member of the U.S.-led nine-nation F-35 consortium, has already said that it means to buy around 100 JSFs. But Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul, in response to questions by an opposition parliamentary deputy on the JSF program, said for the first time in a Jan. 17 statement that the maximum figure would be 116.

Turkish Aerospace Industries flies Mosquito armed UAV

Turkish Aerospace Industries has performed the debut flight of its first unmanned rotorcraft, the Sivrisinek, or Mosquito, which is designed to carry air-launched weapons.

Developed for the Turkish army, the Mosquito test aircraft has a 300kg (660lb) maximum take-off weight and is expected to carry a 120kg payload, including an Aselsan-supplied forward-looking infrared sensor. The UAV is also pictured carrying a below-fuselage container for Roketsan Cirit 70mm guided rockets.

TAI says the Mosquito will have an endurance of 1.5h and a range of 4.3nm (8km), and be suitable for operations in high mountains and in hot environmental conditions.

The first flight was performed from TAI’s Ankara-Akinci facility, and follows the 30 December debut sortie of the company’s Anka/Phoenix medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV.

Its main weapon will be the Roketsan Cirit (or Jereed in English) 2.75″ laser guided rocket with built in INS guidance, using the smart launcher.

My guess is a projct model like Altay main battle tank (i.e. local development + foreign know-how & technology transfer) is more likely.

Its more logical both economically and technically than the development of all systems from the scratch 🙂 As we saw the Indian Tejas fighter development started in 1983 and the first deliveries performed this year…

I thought Turkey had joined South Korea and Indonesia for a new jet?

To my brothers from Turkey: IF the F-35 deal falls through, what other options are there in your opinion?

There are news about Turkish companies are going to take part in the Korean KF-X project but Turkey especially want an %50-50 share at that project for its future fighter plans!

On the other hand now there has started an indigenous fighter project which will be the Turkey’s frontline fighter together with the F-35s and F-16s in the future.

It should be clear that there is not any problems with F-35 🙂 Yesterday at a news channel there was news about the Turkeys future fighter F-35 😀 Turkey has a big work share at that project with many companies as TAI, Aselsan, Aspilsan, Havelsan, Mikes, STM, TEI, Kale Kalıp, Alp Aviation, Aydın Yazılım, Gate, Kimetsan, Hesfibel, Barış, Boron Technologies, Coşkundeniz Holding, Hema, Kaletron, Koç Sistem, Taksan, Milsoft, Petlas, Selex and Vestel. So everything is ok without the delays of F-35:p

The Zaman newspaper is not a reliable source of course…

This is from the same newspaper, Turkish version: http://www.zaman.com.tr/haber.do?hab…det-f35-alacak

According to the MoD, Turkey will buy 116 F-35’s…

The reality is none of the gulf countries have no technology for helping Turkey such a complex project. And Turkey is still a reliable partner for the F-35 program and plans the F-35 production in Turkey! The news is just BS…

Than if a country is planning to create an fifth gen. aircraft they should firstly start with the S-Duct air intake design and production R&D 🙂 Even if necessary an R&D work for such an simple part! There are lots of pictures and info about their production…

I having truoble believing that the Aerodynamic, FCS and engines test trials is ‘almost done’.. if it is what you are implying here?
There are countless test regime to test out before that happens.

One of those is Shutting down engines, and restart in mid-flight.
At the same time study the FCS performance and the overall stability of the prototype.
Aka mimic and engine failure or damage etc etc, mind you its so many variables we are talking about here..

And what if the next flying prototype will have some minor changes in its aerodynamic layout..

All these works takes time but as you know they have at least five years for the serial birds:)

    No medal64.
He says that the 01, 02, 03, 04 protoype will have to do approx 2000 hours of test flight.
Note that there will be another T-50-KNS for ground tests too.
There is currently only one, the ’01’ flying.

If you mean on the ‘Aerodynamic, flight control system and engines.
It seems like they have done a ‘job well done’ considering the aggresive flight demonstration shown to the Indians and PM Putin, while only at its 14 or so test flight.

But they still have a long road to go on Systems & Avionics tests and trials.

Before taking in service 2000 flying hours should be done for the new aircraft had been said by Mr. Putin.

Its sure the priority for the Mr. Fedorov should be the aerodynamic, flight control system and engines but the work almost done is a general speech and in my opinion it means the development work for most of the systems conducted. So there just left an integration and testing phase then the bird will be ready for service;) Thats my idea:cool:

A first pre production squadron will be introduced in 2013, they will be full production models, for systems integration and training for 2015 mass production.

Radar and so are nearly finished, but there´s not a necessity to equip today´s prototypes with them.

It strange but at one of the statement also Alexey Fedorov stated that the Russian version of the PAK-FA is almost finished and they will concentrate on the Russian-Indian version! Seems like there is not much money for the test of all systems in the flying prototypes and for more flying hours such Americans did or first version of the bird will not be as advanced as they stated before:confused:
