The Johns Multiplane?
Thanks Geoff
Following your lead I’ve been googling “multiplane” and have found this on Flickr (including a flight photo) … the Johns Multiplane. I wonder if this is what I had seen?
I rather prefer the Caproni mind you … having seen it now. Unfortunate it didn’t work too well …. but that’s the very point I was setting out to make elsewhere!
I haven’t found any information on the Johns.
[EDIT] This unsuccessful experimental aircraft was comprised of seven wings, six ailerons, and three Liberty engines. Created by Herbert Johns, the few reported flights of the aircraft ended ungracefully and the plane was scrapped.
Geoff … sames as James’ (JDK’s) post #2
Not yet (I think)
Thanks guys
That Caproni’s awesome, but not what I have in my mind’s eye (but you know how fickle the memory is). I “see” a large aircraft (WWI or 20’s bomber sized) looking more or less like a large motorised version of the pedal powered thing Chris references.
There have been threads (and there are websites) about ugly/strange aircraft and I “think” I saw it there. James, did Brett H create a thread like that? I must look there.
Thanks, cheers D
Love that 190!
Apologies if I’m ill informed Matthias. But I LOVE that Fw. Is the colour scheme representative of an operational aircraft (like nothing I’ve ever seen) or is it something of the owner’s preference? I think it looks fantastic.
regards Don
The Lanc’s OK … but the rest. Wow!
What a superb video … I mean the Lanc’s mildly interesting … the amazing colour footage of the B17s with radar and yellow markings, the Malcolm Hood P51 (B or C?), and the Razorback P47. Just brilliant. D
Looks very like a Bordelaise A.B.20…

It isn’t a ‘Tee You’ (in caps) – it’s a Tu (pronounced ‘Too’)
From the name of the founder of the OKB – Andrei Tupolev.
The first two letters of his last name – Tupolev.Same with Sukhoi (Su / Soo) – not ‘Ess You’.
You know i reckon there’s a touch too much sensitivity hereabouts. I read this with interest. It was news to me and I thought, well done that (flanker) man, for telling us.
And then a bunch of people get all bitter and twisted about it. WTF!
The (good) thing about this forum is that it’s a place to learn. Sometimes a poster will phrase things in a way that might at a glance be misconstrued, it pays to take a breath and see through that.
Black 6 sounded absolutely stunning – I remember the sound of her flying over long before I remember the sound of a merlin 🙂
Nothing sounded as good as she did imho
Black 6? That’s no Fw! That said, I concur; I love the sound of those DB V12s, including the supercharger “whistle”.
And thanks folks for the comments re oil … makes a lot of sense.
I’m also thinking about the doppler effect, the sound I don’t like is as the Fw’s fly away … and that’s obviously a slower sound.
D
Thank you Daren & Peter
I guess there’s not a lot in it? The BMW sounds a little harsher/harder if you know what i mean. But that could be down to the quality of the various recordings on Facebook and youTube.
I note enormous amounts of smoke firing up these old radials (not just on these Fws) – and if I’m hearing it right, a lot of misfiring until the engines settle down. Why is that?
thanks, D
Thank you sfp54 … 100% clear. cheers D
Both at once?
Very interesting, but I’m struggling a touch with this.
In one position the guard allows you to fire the cannon and in the other the MGs.
How do you fire both at once? Or can’t you?
cheers and thanks, Don
Thank you James for the info & links about E-EMU … fascinating stuff.
And thank you also Caroline for the link to the movie on youtube. I’ve just spent about 20 mins trolling through a bunch of wonderful related vids on youtube!
Watching those large flying boats land it strikes me there must be a sudden pull of drag as soon as the hull touches. Can anyone comment about landing technique … pull back on the stick to avoid “diving” so to speak, or was there perhaps a “ground effect” rather like what occurs with a land plane in those last couple of metres?
Thanks all, cheers Don
Pathe newsreel of the Implacable’s demise. Painful:
… what the hell did they do that for?
Elusive pictures
Whoa there, handbags down, guys, it was MY fault for trotting out what is obviously a myth…. sorry, forgot he had to get his parachute on first!! I’ll engage brain (hopefully) before posting next time.
Handbags at 50 paces! haha. Seriously there’s no drama here. 😉
And I agree with LW206 … great find Beachcomber.
If only I could find EE147
