Now now ,sticks and stones… I thank those of you that have said something complimentary about my project (robbo included) , however this isn’t about opinions, (although I’d want to see something “in the flesh” in order to have an accurate opinion myself) comments like ” if they all got together, they might restore a complete aircraft one day”, isn’t really an opinion its sarcasm, other pearls of wisdom like “did he find the bits in a skip” and “that pointy thing on the front will have someone’s eye out” are I think for the general amusement of the select few. To those of you who don’t like it – thats fine, you don’t have to ,its still a democracy (here in the UK), that would be your opinion ;some people don’t like mk IX spitfires they only like mkI’s, others only like fast jets , there are those who don’t like aeroplanes at all (its true) some people collect stamps ,I dare say that if you were to say about a group of them that “one day they might get enough stamps together to send a parcel ” they might well find such comments annoying also.
Stuart,
Who cares what they say about your project. 😡
It’s bloody fantastic. In time it will count as another suvivor and you
and only you have achieved that despite what others might say.
There is a difference between being quiet and doing your bit for the
preservation community and others who achieve nothing and compensate
that by using their mouths instead of their hands/brains.
If my Halifax cockpit section only ever resembles the authentic appearance
such as your Spitfire then I am a very happy man.
My hat goes off to you (if I had one)
Cheers

Keep up the excellent work Elliott.

Moggy,
This panel has been put on e-bay several times before, the pic is even the same. I don’t understand why this is being done. Apart from that the panel looks terrible.
Cees
Hope to have some pix up in a couple of weeks.
The first replacement instruments are being repainted where there are a few scratches on the cases but my main problem is getting hold of panel screws to mount them.
Cliff
Sounds like a common problem.

Hi Andy,
No, unfortunately not, We didn’t have the time. We passed through the Kielder forest where substantial Halifax wreckage is located but there wasn’t even time for that. Next time I’m sure to go have a look.
Cees
Hello
Do you have any pictures of the recovery? that you can post.
Regards
Hi there,
I’m afraid not as I have lost the issue. There was also a small snippet in one of the early FlyPasts.
Although I have a feeling both Andy Saunders and Mark 12 have some lying around. 😉
Cees
Cees, that may well be covered by the “Fools and Bairns” clause. I never told Mike the job was finished. The cockpit is very much a work in progress.
Deryck
Thanks Deryck,
I would have thought so. With all the attention to detail that has gone into NA337 I never would dare to think the throttle box would be forgotten to stick out like a sore thumb 😀
She is looking better and better.
Keep it up
Cees
How about a Sterling with four Griffins?
Vely delibelate mislake
Cees
oooh just look at their shiny throttle box Cees… :p 🙂
TT
Yes, it looks nice but it’s the wrong colour 😎
The throttle box should be black with the throttle levers
in (anodized?) grey aluminium. it looks odd this way
But I wouldn’t refuse if it was offered to me.
:diablo:

Hi Andy, Excellent question! We wondered too. However it seems to be standard on the A. models, wartime photos bear it out. The only thoughts on the subject were that it might make the edge of the open floor hatch easier to see in the dark, assuming that they turned off the interior lighting when about to drop a “joe” or a packet.
Deryck
The Canadian hally’s B MK III’s etc. fitted with the Preston Green gun mounting also had this. I think it’s a HP thing.

Having been active in aviation archaeology for the past seventeen years I have seen a lot of items being advertised for sale from known people (outside our group fortunately). I also agree it being unethical to sell relics from crashsites, regardless of loss of lives or not. Mostly there are always personal stories involved which usually are not very positive. But it is difficult to stop people from continueing this trend. You only have to look at e-bay for that matter. As long as there is demand there will always be a supply.
personally I don’t buy this stuff but if there are items which I can use for my Halifax cockpit project then I know that it is being used for something useful instead of collecting dust on a mantlepiece somewhere.
My two cents worth
Cees
Many Thanks Mike,
These will sure come in handy.
You lucky man.
Cheers

Ahh, the good old shotgun wedding.
😀
Cees
Yes, and also had some skin panels buckled due to bad handling to get her off the beach.
Impressive exhibit

Soon after recovery it was immersed in a bath to get the salt out. Seems to have worked very well. If a windshield can be found she looks magnificent. Something is missing…………….
