I probably wouldn’t hold your breath, Cees
just ongoing corrosion control I think
It was like that when I visited soon after the Millstones of Flight opened
I don’t think we can expect a restoration of NA337 proportions…..
Simon,
No, that wasn’t something I would have hoped for of course but it’s good news to see at least some work is being done to her. Cleaning away the red muck would at least give her a better appearance, as well as some fitting of perspex and removed skinning. It would be nice if someone would know what the plans are. Time to do some digging I think

What?
Now already?? And Sinterklaas hasn’t even left the country yet!

taking something inanimate and unloved and returning it to ‘live’ status – as time progresses more and more of our past is preserved – ok so some of the aircraft crash or are poorly restored, but over time they are recycled and generally the trend is a move towards preserving our aviation past…properly
requirements?
1. Money. Thats why restorations take such a long time!
2. Time
3. Patience
4. Commitment – in many forms (for example i look every day to chase down T-6 spares)
5. Bloody Mindedness – listen and learn but sod em if THEY try and grind you down.
6. Passion. You have to have a reason for doing this – we all have different ones, ownership, the veterans, the engineering etc
7. Mental Instability. It would be a lot easier to sit in front of the TV (and cheaper)
8. ….which naturally means you need getoffyour****ability. 48000 people read FP each month in the UK. Less than half i imagine are involved with aviation hands on, of those that arent I bet half of those think they know more/better than those that are!
Ben
I second that, all of them. Speaking from experience of course but in the field of aviation archeology.

Spitfire 21 LA226 formerly at South Marston (and now in storage) used to suffer an engine failure and glided a very large distance back to base. Must be in an old FP-issue iirc, or Mark should know.

Any Hastings centresection and wings lying about on some fire-dump?
Would be nice to make Duxfords Hermes a complete aircraft again.

Daz,
The photo seems to have been taken in Spain. The aluminium finish of the other aircraft looks like their regular service finish and could indicate that this was a normal service mishap before or after the filming of BoB. The prop looks like it has been shattered under power so must have been a real belly-landing. AFAIK the mock up was built by the filmstudios in the UK and never left Britain. Just a guess.

Hi Colin,
Yes, I remember when visiting the IWM at Lambeth in 1987 that that simulator was present and took a ride in it. It was absolutely fascinating and gave you the feeling you were actually on your way towards Amiens.

Halifax W1048 lying on a load of gravel pretending to be the bottom of Lake Hoklingen. In any way something more interesting can be done to share the same limelight the Lancaster next to her is getting.
Sorry, just can’t help it. Must have something to do with the great job the Canadians have done to NA337

With respect, £10m would barely get you one control surface. 🙂

Would that cost be only be for the drawings or tooling etc?

This recovery was also published in FlyPast in 1984.

Cees i am referring to the panel that is on the right side forward of the colicos holding the skin panel down nearest the windshield.
What is wrong with the canopy framing? sorry halis arent my strong point
I think the nose skinning shoiuld be almost like a letter Z tye of thing correct?
Peter,
Yes, you nailed it. The photo show the pattern correctly.

Fantastic! Many thanks for letting us see these! Would be interesting to compare with the ours at Elvington? From ‘0’ Halifaxes, we now have ‘2’, so maybe there’s hope for a Stirling or Whitley yet?
Albert,
Don’t forget YAM’s Hally and the nose of PN323. In Germany an almost complete Halifax is lying in a lake. There were plans for a recovery, but no news on that for a while now.
