Not sure if your aware of it, but theres already a complete Halifax in England – Halifax B.III ‘Friday the Thirteenth’ at Yorkshire Air Museum, made of different Halifaxes, it’s a fantastic rebuild. Theres also the complete wreckage of one (as far as i’m aware, main parts missing are undercarriage and perspex, and bent prop blades) at the RAF Museum Hendon sitting on it’s belly

And don’t forget the complete cockpitsection of Halifax VII PN323 at the IWM Lambeth. I will be going to London again just before Christmas and guess where I will be visiting as well

Now to tell the wife (again).

    Cheers

Ah great the newsletters working now. Does anyone know anything about Guiseppe Lombardi? I’ve heard his name before for something else…. can’t remember what though

    Short Stirling perhaps?

Hear Hear Pino and Crew need YOUR support!

    Yes TT

Anything Stirling related could be of use. Good to see that they are rescueing parts from high ground wrecks. They also have the sections from the RAF Museum on loan for reference. Why not donate it to them as the aim is to display the completed aircraft in a major UK museum, then why not at Hendon (although the height could be a problem).

    Hey Dave,

I drove by on the night of Oct 11 and they had just applied the brown to the top of the aircraft. Even though they had covered the windows with plastic you could still see a bit.

    Don’t worry about pictures!

    I won’t 😀

It is in salt water but the location where she is at, the bottem is very deeply silted so hopefully she is well protected.

Karl also told me that LW170 could be at a depth of about 1 km, which could lesson the risk of corrosion. But I tried to talk him into looking for some Halifaxes in Norway (same raid as W1048) of which one crashed in the Trondheimfjord (where the Kondor was recovered from and now under restoration) but he insisted on LW170. I hope he succeeds.

Gone over their bandwith now so will have to wait to read it – can’t wait though, fantastic project, are they just going for the forward fuselage like the Dutch group of the whole big beauty?

As far as I know they are aiming for a full grown Stirling with the cockpit section as having priority. The cockpit section in our museum is made from wood but is having two newly built pilot seats installed with measurements taken from an original Stirling seat that was found near Arnhem.

    Alan,
    You lucky b…. man :p

That’s what I like so much about those stories of aeronautical treasures being find in someone’s garden. Hope there will be a Halifax fuselage section being used as a shed somewhere. Could be useful 🙂

I hope to find an affordable BP turret one day. I was offered one recently (thanks again for thinking of me) but the price was too steep.
As I said, magnificent technology, something the Germans couldn’t quite match.

    Thanks for they replies chaps,

Strange that a relatively large number of turret cupola’s have survived as well as there is a good number of electrical parts available but the really important parts are impossible to come by. What caused this? I can imagine that people buying turrets for garden produce would keep the cupolas but scrap the rest or is it something else?

Just trying to keep this thread going as the turrets are an often forgotten topic and personally I find the technology fasciniating.

    Phil,

Pity I took my driving tests before they started the new fashion 😎 Pity it rains so often in Holland, you might think you were in the UK instead. Now where is that page three…………..

or the Dutch Mitchell on display at Overloon, a warveteran with dozens of sorties to its credit. It was restored to static a few years ago after having suffered from the weather for decades.

Are those shrouded pulleys still available? They are used in the trimming controls of the Halifax as well. I have an original set but have suffered a bit from a sudden stop

What happened to the eight or so Oxford wrecks that were found in Canada as reported in FlyPast? They were far gone but could provide some sections to make one or two complete examples. We have the tailwheel-assembly of an Oxford in the museum which was used for instruction and some parts have been cut away,

    Thanks Fuji,

That confirms my opinion. Any clue to what year it could have been
manufactured or from what model prop it originates?

I think the prop wasn’t used but came from the RNethAF Spitfire spares holding and was disposed off through official channels where others were able to obtain it. We are speaking about the end of the fifties here.
