Lezza & northeagle thanks for the great book info !

    BlueNoser352 here :

Well a big day for your nation with all the PM eleciton news.. been following it all day on the BBC. Hey maybe I can get the new PM to open all the top secret files on the mission. But on a serious matter… a big thanks to all of you who have added to this discussion…. aside from my long historical readings on The Great Escape ..which many of you have been kind enought to submit your vast knowledge & personal photos over the years. This raid by Mossie’s had long held my attention and this fourm has provided all of us with a nice wealth of information. Thanks Lezza & Northeagle for the book recommendations .solid stuff here. Today I totally forgot a old French film I bought on Amazon Uk several years ago…. made in the late 40s’ ” Jericho”. The film of course show old Mosquito combat footage woven into the story. French Resistance men about to be shot and a quick strike by the RAF blows open the walls of the prison and the men run out. The film ends with the crash of a Mossie ..I take it to be Pickering …as the trucks carring the free resistance fighters drives by.

Hopefully I can somehow get hold of a copy of this documentary made about Broadley & The Raid from the ariticle I posted from a 2005 story in The Northern Echo ( being a photojournalist myself..thought this was a pretty neat name for a newspaper ) Have sent out several emails and hope someone can locate a copy of this documentary for me… well lets hope its out on dvd in a Pal format. I can play Pal or region two dvd’s with no problem !

Even thought its now 2010.. there still must be secret information not yet released on this raid and its background or role in the war..perhaps still contained in your “OFFICAL SECRETS ACT” Even here in the USA ..there are still files not yet released to WW II historians or given access by the general public. Lezza.. I am going to get that “Gestapo Hunters” book..sounds like a good one. The title reminds me of story from the great magazine ” After The Battle”… along time BlueNoser352 favorite…. about the low level Shell House Raid by Mosquito’s of the RAF… hitting Gestapo HQ… sadly however an explosion took out a school house if memory serves me correctly.
Andy Saunders.. I just ordered your book , ” Finding The Few” look forward to getting and know it will be a great addition to my BOB book collection. By chance will this ever be put into book on cd form….. ?

Thanks again for all who added to this discussion… one among many reasons why I have enjoyed the forum..you Gents know your stuff for sure !
Best of luck to your new adminstration !

    Denis:

That is wonderful that you village takes the time each year to remember these men & the mission ! BlueNoser352 offers a salute to all of you who continue to honor these men. Ok I guess here is the 64 thousand dollar question…………..I see the book I read is under some question..now I see this book about to be released seems in question. Is there a site or book written that tells what really happen here on this raid? I have collected bits and parts about the raid.. hopefully there is a website or book one can recommend ? They flew this mission for some reason & risked their lives in the process…. hopefully there is some place where we can read the total truth about the mission.

    Thanks Forum members!

My condolence to his family & friends !

Sad to hear this news… was just watching a documentary today at home … The Last DamBuster and was looking at some docs on Youtube when I saw this note on the forum. A salute for his service to GB during the dark days of WW II. My condolences to his friends & family… I have the 60th anniversary of the raid by Channel Four and he is featured in it. I believe if memory serves me correctly… his Lanc crashed in Holland and was taken POW by the Germans ….something to that effect. A brave man for sure ..as were so many of the men of Bomber Command ! Will have to get that dvd out tonight and watch it in honor of Mr Grayston !

    Rest In Peace Sir !

    BlueNoser352 Here:

Greeting forum members.. sounds like a great historical concept for a series.. Four parts..that is excellent and sounds like they shot lots of material for the program. For those of us here in the Colonies , here is hoping it makes it onto dvd for sale or some good soul here will record it and put it on Youtube for all to enjoy and learn from. Is this like a Time Team program ? I like the one they did in Northern France on the Spitifre recovery and reunited the dead pilots with one of his relatives..very emotional Time Team program.
    Thanks !

Get the series on Youtube for us FlyPasters overseas !

Wow ..that’s an old topic from back in 2004 !

That’s one from the past for sure……… I wanted to buy that Cadin book but just rich for my bank account ! 12 O’Clock High still the best film ever on The Mighty Eighth. Its getting harder than ever to find a Eighth veteran where I live.. time has moved on so quickly and those men are passing fast. I do miss the work of Roger Freeman , who’s wonderful well researched book are a thing of beauty. I have most of them and what a tresure trove of info on all aspects of life in the Eighth ! His efforts did much to ensure the history of the Eighth will not be forgotten. I always wanted to shake his hand and thank him for this efforts.

A great two hour history channel story !

I will try and find the title for you on the US History Channel Page .. they had a great story about a young Lt flying a B-17, shot down over France and hidden by the Reisitance. Given up by someone in the Resistance he is captured and sent to off all places a concentration camp . He and his fellow US flyers deal with the ordeal of being held in horrible conditions until the end of the war . Will see if I can find out the title for you…..very moving story for sure. A local history professor wrote a book about his experiences. It has run several times here in the USA on The History Channel & History International as well !

Thanks so much for posting this… that is some remarkable story of one brave woman. Many owe their lives and freedom to her efforts. Always have admired those of the SOE & OSS for the war they fought against the Nazi along with very brave resistance fighters like Ms Peel. One tough determined woman…my condolences to her family and friends. I am sure many Ailled fliers owe her a big thanks !

    Keith & Peter a great idea !

    BlueNoser352 here :

Great idea men and if I lived in the UK and has seen this fine film many times ..would be neat to see it on a full movie screen. If nothing else to remember and honor that generation of ” The Few” for what they did. I tired to do this here in the US with ” The Longest Day” really before vhs & dvd came along in the early 80’s ..talked to several movie houses but the management didn’s see to interested! Good luck on your venture and would be a great way to raise money for a needy charity ! Good luck on your idea men…….. go gett’em !

    Col Robert K Morgan

Seems like another life time since the Memphis Belle film came out in the early 90’s…. while taking a few liberities with history..it was neat to see some of the flying scenes. I lived very close to the late Col Morgan and he was such a fine man. Went to several airshows and talked with him and several other members of the original crew. Col Morgan was most modest about this his time in the 91st BG. He said he hoped the Wyler film was a tribute to all who flew in the Eighth and other combat theathers in the war. Many have forgotten after his time in the Eighth .. he flew many missions in the new B-29 in the pacific ! I do remember him coming back to Duxford in 94 for the 50th anniversary and he again meet Queen Elizabeth ! Fine man who thought much of your country and its people. Like many of the RAF bomber crews he knew he was most lucky to survive his 25 mission and come home. He was always willing to talk or sign a print or book… he is most missed here in the Carolinas. He now rest in the lovely western North Carolina mountians near his home town of Asheville, North Carolina !

All Hail the 91st BG ..The ragged irregulars !

    Steve:

Thanks ..thanks for the note on the 506th PIR guys at Duxford. Saw many of them early on in June in Normandy with so many British veterans. It is a special feeling just to speak to these men . Having as many here have..read so much about them and this generation. Yes you get a lump in the throat and misty eyes now just refelecting on what I saw in Normandy and each time I meet a WW II veteran. Love this forum and the great photos and comments posted here. I see some of you have taken the time to post some videos on Youtube…. thanks. Nothing to cheer one up than to hear and see that wonderful Spitfire cutting across the skies of the UK ! Nice to see some good soul has posted that outstanding series ” Spitfire Ace” on Youtube. This needs to be out on dvd for sure. Thanks again Steve on the thoughts of the veterans. Speaking as a veteran myself of the US Army I hold your country in the highest regard & its military. First class lads for sure and have enjoyed my association with them in the past ! Hope my travels will soon take me back to enjoy a day at Duxford. Take care !

A salute to all my friends in the UK !
