Daz…saw this tonight on the board and thanks for posting this…have been looking for this since I have such a great interest in this topic. The Great Escape as it has come to be called has always been a story I have been reading about since my youth and I try to collect any book or tv documentary about it. Just picked up a new documentary from our National Public Broadcasting sytem onthe subject. Its the Channel 5 documentary made for an American audience I believe. Looking back on the US Governments actions against those young men who went to help Britain during the war via Canada is horrible and all charges should have been dropped when the US entered the war. Talk about having your head in the sand as the world is going up in flames!!!!! Will pick this up …thanks. Have been reading Anton Gill’s fine work “The Great Escape”. Its an outstanding work on the subject …..thanks for sharing this…would love to shake this man’s hand !!! Hope he is in good health and enjoying life as a free man !

Dave , thanks for all that great info on the movie, now comes the hard part…finding a copy out there. I see on IMDB there is no listing on VHS or DVD , maybe some of our French friends can help or recommend a video house that sells this title ! I see it came out in 1945, wonder how many real Mossie’s they used in the film? Would be nice to hear from any of our readers who have been to Amien Prison to visit it or have photos of how the place looks today! A film waiting to be made ! Thanks again Dave for the great info !

Thanks men for the comments and reviews of “The Purple Plain”, that was not my review by the way on the original post. I found that on the web at amazon.com I think and should have credited the original source. Of course Peck’s finest role in his long career has to be “Twelve O’Clock High”, this one belongs in everbody’s collection
who post on this board! Long Live The Mighty Eighth !
Thanks !

Dave, about a year ago, UK’s Channel Four did a documentary about the disapperance of Maj. Glenn Miller, with a theory that his Norseman might have been brought down in the channel due to being struck by bombs from British Lancaster’s returning for main land Europe and dumping their bombs in the ocean . I need to add that one for you on tape and will do so. Kieth greeting and good to see you on the board, thanks for notes on those books published about Miller. Long Live the Memory of 617 Sq and the Dam Busters !
Take Care !

Count me in to here as well in the lower 48…( states that is), great historical site and a fantastic research tool for those of us who love history. Guess any historical sound recording we have here in the US, would be in Washington DC in the National Archieves. Book marked the site for future use …thanks for posting this ! Trying to find a link to any camera footage taken by the RAF Mossie’s that attacked the Amiens Prison Raid in Feb of 1944. Any clues..found some stills taken from the film….need to write that screen play for that movie !!!

Thanks men for the info ( also any ladies if they posted here as well) on books about this event in Feb of 1944. It’s a story of daring bravery and would be a great film. I do remember the display they had in the bottom of The Imperial War Museum, the actual film of the attack displayed on a screen as you rode in a similator. Will get my hands on a copy of the book. Thanks again from BlueNoser352!
PS
Of course the film I would make would only have actors from the countries involved in the actual attack…no disrepect of any actors in my country inteneded. That should keep everybody happen and stick to true historical facts would be nice as well.(Yes.U-571 lesson here)
Thanks Robbo for the link and title to the book, man would I love to see a great director like Speilberg take on a project like this ( with no american actors allowed), its got to be one of the bravest act undertaken by the resistance & RAF during the war! By the way..what kind of copit are you sitting in when this photo was taken? Lancaster ??????
