Wow…what a line up of brave men and women ,sure wish I could make that event. I have always enjoyed the work of Richard Todd, in addition to his skills on the big screen , he served his nation in time of war. Would love to hear the comments and talk to “Beatrice’ the SOE agent and her take on the Amiens Prison Raid. I was hoping to see this event in WWII made into a top notch film ( of course with no american in the film) . I think its one of the great deed’s of bravery in the second world war. With modern film computer generated planes & other objects, one could reproduce all the Mossie’s that flew on the prison raid. Hope someone is filming and recording this event and will post any news stories about the event ! Thanks for the update Tiger !!!!

Nice story on Mr Valant, its an excellent book and one that I have in my collection on Nose Art. I saw an interview with 91st crew chief Tony Starcer(sp) who painted most of the nose art on the B-17’s in the 91st BG. He did the Belle artwork and said he had very few colors to work with. Guess back then the regulations for nose art was not something they worried about or enforced. Great period for art historians & nose art lovers like most of us here. In 1997 the television station where I work as a photojournalist ( WSPA-TV NewsChannel 7) went to Asheville, NC and flew with Col Robert Morgan in a B-17 , with the Collings Foundiation B-24 along side. What thrill as Morgan took the controls of the B-17’s. He was such a fine man and had the pleasure of talking to him many times over the years and interviewed him once back in 1988 in front of a B-17. He was such a class individual and spoke of the Eighth Air Force as we and not “I”! Many don’t know he went on to fly 50 more missions in a B-29 with the 20th Airforce in the Pacific ! Never saw the program they were filming that day called ” Air Combat”. When he passed away last year , we sent up a photographer to ride along in a B-17 over his funeral , escorted by a P-51 Mustang. I am sure Colonel Morgan wishes he would have had this kind of escort back in 1943 ! You can’t go wrong when you paint the Memphis Belle on anything, it was the Nose Art on my first A-2 jacket !!!!! Might I suggest you paint up a BlueNose P-51 panel….like “Cripes A’ Mighty 3rd” !!!!! LOL….hey just plugging my guys in the 352nd !!!! If I can put my hands on that Morgan story….will let you know !!

Back in 1984 in Greenwood, South Carolina USA, they raised a B-25 Mitchell that had crashed on the Lake on of all days ..June 6th 1944 as the pilot got to low and tore off one of his engines. The B-25 is now on display in Columbia, South Carolina in almost perfect condition. I believe its at the state museum in downtown Columbia.
Thanks!

What???????????????? You would think that the USAF would move in to see that this Lighting be moved to its facility at Dayton and a mock up model is placed on the memorial. Maybe someone can update this….. I find this hard to believe !!!!! I beleive that the Air Force has taken over the Memphis Belle and is moving it off Mud Island in Memphis…perhaps someone here can update the story!

Fire at Yankee Air Museum
Yes Oscar Duck, read about that and what a terrible loss of historical items to a fire. Can’t remember if any aircraft were lost, but I do remember seeing photo’s of the fire that destroyed that building. Sorry for the loss of your father’s historical items. Guess they are trying to rebuild ? Maybe someone can provide any updates here.

Is that P-38 a real one sitting outside in the NJ weather or is that a model ? I would hope it has been moved inside for restoration and repair.
