go4B17… thanks for the reply and yes I have been to Laurens , SC many times for my work and of course the city of Greenville. Use to work their for my company ,but now back in the home office in Spartanburg…just 35 miles away. Bodney is north of Cambridge, seem,s like it took me about one hour and half to drive there. A very small village, Church…..the old control tower is still there and the land is owned by the MOD!
There is a memorial at the front gate of the military complex just down the road from the control tower. I went there one time to ask premission to take some photo’s of the memorial and talked to a group of Gurkha’s that were traning there, thought that was pretty cool ! If you can play region one DVD’s in your dvd machine, there is a fantastic DVD out now about the 352nd Fighter Group called “The Last Reunion” , go to
http://www.lastreunion.com Its one of the best documentaries I have ever seen on a USAF Fighter or Bomber Group on the market. It would take a vast sum of dollars, pounds and euro’s to restore that control tower…hope the actual group at one time thought about it, but to expensive ! Thanks for the reply and hoped you had a good visit to the colonies on your trip.
Thanks Dave and I understand…..all the best ! I see you live in Devon, same place I take it where Slapton Sands ( sp) and Operation Tiger took place before D-Day ? Or do I have the wrong town in the UK. Just picked up a great DVD on ebay produced by ITV about this horrible day for American, losing over 700 GI’s before D-Day! Can go twenty more on bid !..
Thanks !
TC
Dave I sent you a private message regarding book!
Dave: Sent you a private message on the site, let me know what you think.
Thanks !

I would love to restore the Control Tower at Bodney as a memorial to the men of the 352nd Fighter Group & the local villagers who supported them during the dark days of the Second World War. Request that the road running across the airfield be rerouted and the grass field opened again for small commerical aviation. Have a small museum in the bottom of the tower and build several hangers and hardstands to house several BlueNose P-51’s. Build a community room ,with all the modern day multi-media equipment to show and discuss aviation films & documentries , and a place for the community to use for social events . Not a commerical atmosphere intended, but a special place to visit and remember the men who flew from this airfield in WWII.
Dave..would love to buy this book from you!
dave…greetings from the colonies, would love to buy that off you if you would sell it…..thanks!

Battle of Britain film book by Rudhall !!!
Wow…. wish I could have saved my copy, got water logged …..need to have Bill Gates checkbook for this one.
Got my region 1 copy on DVD , from Amazon ..now the series that HAS to come out on DVD is “Spitfire Ace”. Outstanding in evey way…… it just reran here last week in the USA late at night (4:00am est) . Have it on vhs…but its not the same as on DVD.
Would love to have all the raw footage of the flying if nothing else. What has become of Dave Mallon the lucky young man who did so well in this wonderful series? I wrote Channel Four to inquire about this series on DVD, but so far no reply, hope they don’t intend to just allow this to sit on the shelf and collect dust !
Mark I have heard no more news about the possible Tom Cruise film on the life of Billy Fiske , who was killed flying a Hurricane early on during the Battle of Britain. May still be in the works!!!!! Hope others can add to this. Hope we will see a photo of his P-51. Wonder what it cost to insure, own and operate a P-51? The insurance alone must be a boat load full of money !!!!
Here is another on airfields of The Mighty Eighth…….
Here is one site that may help with airfields of The Mighty Eighth, also their is a classic book on this very subject written by British historian Roger Freeman. “Airfields Of The Mighty Eighth, Then And Now”, gives one locations and photos of those historic places in wartime and now. Try this link for bases.

Hendon Mustang…Thanks Martin !
Martin:
Wow, that was quick and thanks for the note on the Hendon Mustang. Speaking of Mustangs , have you had the opportunity of see the new DVD out about the 352nd Fighter Group? Its one of the best documentaries I have seen about a WWII fighter group. Check out this site and perhaps they can send you a pal copy. Great archieve footage and of course plenty of vintage photographs. Sadly the group has held its last reunion and this documentary was based on this. Done by Split S productions out of Florida and worth getting your hands on. Let me know if I can supply futher information, here is website to the company. Also they offer a wonderful soundtrack as well. How’s the weather today. snow and cold I bet, but we know a Merlin can kick over in this weather ! Thanks again for the info and I like your website, great work on your part !
Thanks !

Was this the B-17 named after the daughter of the Colonel who flew this B-17, american actress Swooise Kurtz? I heard her one night on a talk show speaking about this. Said she was named after a B-17 her father flew in WWII.
Well ask and your shall recieve, thanks for the information. I was thinking that perhaps that particular Mustang had some sort of past combat history from WWII and was a gift to the IWM. Now what about the P-51 at Hendon, parked next to the B-17?
I remember seeing one in London at some museum in the 80’s, that had a theme of the London Blitz. Thanks for the notes on “Big Beautiful Doll” at the IWM.
