I’ve been trying to tie it down a bit closer. Thinking back to my personal circumstances, my best guess is late 1976 or early 1977 for when I took my pictures.
I still can’t believe Daz, as a self-confessed Spitfire fanatic, hasn’t read “Sigh for a Merlin”.
He’ll be telling us next he hasn’t got any of Jeffrey Quill’s books. 🙂
Somewhere I’ve got some black & white pics I took in the 70s but I’m struggling to work out the year more accurately. TA634 was in roughly the same place but possibly at slightly less of an angle. Is that an info board in front? If so, I’m pretty sure is wasn’t there then.
Absolutely nothing to do with this thread but I’ve just remembered going to what I think must have been the 40th “birthday dinner” for W4050 in the Robin hangar. Surreal.
Very interesting. I’ve always understood that roller bearings need an oil mist rather than a full pressure feed but whether that also applies to needle rollers I don’t know.
Delage had similar lubrication problems in the mid 20s when they built three V12s to race at Le Mans. They were a total disaster and only completed 1 or 2 laps.
A mate, who rebuilds vintage racing car engines for a living, managed to cure the problem on one a few years back by massively reducing the oil supply. They were roller big ends but I don’t know what type or if the mains were plain bearings.
Delighted to hear it, an amazing man.
I wonder if the other pilot, presumably in charge, felt a little “outranked”. 🙂
Typical – last weekend I was in sunny Hertfordshire, this weekend I’m back in the frozen north. 🙁
I confess to inside info here, or cheating as it’s also known. 🙂
It was taken when Kev, Robbo, Andrew-O and possibly others visited East Kirkby last year and I believe Robbo’s posted it before.
Nasty Froggy stuff. Get yerself outside some decent ale instead.
Don’t you know the nose of a Lanc when you see one? 🙂
I won’t know for certain if I can manage Brooklands until a day or so beforehand. Unless somebody wants to lay in extra stocks of XL T-shirts I’ll have to be in disguise.
Thanks guys! I hadn’t seen the one with the tail on the budgie perch before…
Don’t say that, you’ll only set Lancman off again. 🙂
….nothing in there for the single, childless, beer drinking persons amongst us! 😉

Never has been, never will be.
An Allison is a deep-throated purr, a Griffon sounds like it wants to kill something and a Merlin’s in the middle.
I don’t have to do much sniffing at the moment. My local, about a third of a mile away, was CAMRA pub of the year 2004. 😀
Unfortunately, they’re plotting to retire this year which could change things.
I’m about 10 minutes East of Chesterfield which helps except for Manchester. From memory, Aeroventure’s about 40 minutes, Newark 45 minutes, Elvington an hour and a quarter and both East Kirkby and Coningsby an hour and a half plus.
I have a cunning plan…
My Mum lives in SE Hertfordshire. That makes it a shorter, simple journey. Unfortunately, most of it’s M25. 🙁
I want to get to Brooklands but I don’t know yet if I can make it. Chesterfield isn’t a good place to start from.
