Amazing is a good description. The only time I’ve seen it was at Legends. The sound was certainly different although I can’t say in what way, just… different.

The amazing bit is the way it took off. Compared to the other Spits taking off at the same time, it went up like a lift.

I’ve a feeling Coanda was doing a aero-engineering or similar course at Bristol.

I’m not quite as elderly as Moggy but not far behind him. Motorbike for 2 years, had 6 car lessons and failed test, went back to ‘bike for another year, winter approached again so had another car lesson and passed. 32 years ago. 🙁

The only advantage to being ancient is some of the lessons were £1.65 and the last few had gone up to £1.75.

I never took a bike test, every time I saved up for it the bike fell to bits and the loot had to be spent on that. The annoying thing is the very same bike is still in my garage now, a 1959 250cc AJS and as they’ve changed the rules I can’t ride it now unless I pass a test first on another bike with the gear lever on the wrong side.

I don’t think there are any complaints about the “Cold War” exhibition.

What I’m complaining about is the ### they’re putting it in.

I remember another of those facts was the searchlamp that hangs off the Orion was, from memory, around 100,000 candle power, and if you were looking at it when it switched on, you’d go blind.

The Leigh Light was 22,000,000 candlepower. I guess it was more than 100,000 Dave.

The Bristol (RR) Olympus is used in more than a few power stations. I know they’re used for standby power as they can be brought on line very quickly, whether there are any continuous “main supply” installations I don’t know.

I was about to add I guess not, given the relatively short TBO of a gas turbine when running continuously but it’s not likely to be as stringent as aviation requirements. Anybody know the TBO of a naval Olympus?

I suppose I must consider myself a little churlish for complaining. Duxford is a 4 hour round trip for me and on balance I decided not to go on Saturday. Right decision? Possibly.
Daz crossed the Atlantic, admittedly combined with another reason for coming, I note Steiglitz was there and I’m sure there were others that travelled far further than I didn’t.

I suspect our North American and probably Antipodean friends consider a 4 hour round trip to be just down the road. I still think they’re pushing it with prices but Duxford is unique and the envy of many around the world.

Familiarity breeds contempt? Wrong saying but the nearest I can think of at present.

The weather here’s been much better today and if I’d thought of it earlier in the day I might have gone. Sounds like my habitual lateness has done me a favour for once.

Got to feel sorry for the people that did go, and the organisers as well. However justified the comments made over the last few days may or may not be a total washout is terrible for everybody.
