It wasn’t really a find as it was hidden rather than lost, and I didn’t know what it was at the time, but how about the dismantled prototype Mossie in a hangar at Panshanger in around 1956? 😀
[sulk]Shant talk to you ever again[/sulk]
I didn’t say which 2 or 3 I did look at.
Suit yourself. 🙂
I looked at possibly 2 or 3 RIAT threads but in most cases I didn’t. They were clearly marked. I know a fair number of the photographers that use this board and they know I’m not interested in the modern stuff.
I’ll be fairly surprised if they’re deeply offended. I’ll probably find out soon enough. 🙂
I’m not really sure what I think, but a valid point that’s been made previously is the airshow threads go mad immediately after a major airshow, (there’s a surprise) but then tend to fade away fairly quickly.
I admit to being surprised to see the RIAT threads here but there is historic content and, somewhere, it does say airshows for this particular forum.
I had a sneaking suspicion about who wrote the FP supplement. 🙂
I’m glad to see my little grey cells are still functioning to a certain extent as far remembering the approximate number.
At one stage I believe there were around 60 world-wide. I think it was FlyPast did a special supplement or extended article a few years back and that was their figure.
I don’t know of any that have been completely destroyed since then, although given the current facilities available I’m not sure it’s possible. 🙂
Botha twice James? I’m fairly confident nobody would think it merits that. 🙂
Certainly they appear thin on the ground.
I don’t remember consciously ever hearing of them before, although with the years I’ve spent poring over books I must have done. I thought the Botha had Taurus (Tauriii?), it doesn’t seem enough grunt for the Empires and the rest I wouldn’t have a clue.
Sorry I missed you Dan, it would have been nice to put a face to a name. I trust you enjoyed the show.
Makes my complaint about 2 hours to home look pretty silly. 🙂
Ok Guys,
For us Yanks does anyone have a nice piccie of one so we can all see what your talking about. 😀
Cheers

Wish you hadn’t asked Rob? 😀
Biggest disaster in this country, IMHO is when some idiot decided they were aircraft. It put a zero, minimum, on the end of all the costs. Something that “flies” a few feet above the water/ground and will happily float if the engine(s) stop is not an aeroplane.
The SRN 4’s were really impressive beasts. I only ever did one return cross-channel trip on one and it was certainly an experience.
AFAIK, only Rolls-Royce (Derby, Glasgow, Crewe), Ford UK and Packard USA built Merlins but I’m always ready to be proved wrong.
It would make sense for Casa to set up an overhaul facility for 111’s and Buchons but production would seem over the top.
Somebody (JDK?) posted a pic a year or so back of a Merlin component with Buick cast into it.
Edit
Henry Ford said no when the British Government asked him to build Merlins, before Pearl Harbour. I think Packard volunteered but I’m not certain.
Ford built Merlins in Manchester.

30,000 plus of them IIRC.
In Sir Stanley Hooker’s words (from memory but pretty close) “they came out like shelling peas, and very good engines they were.”
Thanks Rob, just found it by accident. PC crashed so when I rebooted I cleared the cache and then really deleted it. I may have worked out the Microsoft logic but I’m not convinced so thanks for the tip.
Great pics of AR501 Rob.
Good place to stand, even if you were in Moondance’s way. 🙂
BTW, anybody any idea why the thumbnails disappear?
Rocketeer, if I may be so bold, please make that ragwing Hurri the very first image you rescan… I can’t wait to see a better scan of this very VERY early Hurricane! (Note the kidney exhausts, Watts prop, and no lower tail strake)
Looks like you’ve got a veritable goldmine on your hands. 🙂 Thanks for sharing these!
Lynn
Well spotted. I completely missed that.
