Chox,
Richard L Wards book, Lightning Squadrons of the Royal Air Force has both pictures you are looking for, the copyright for both pictures is quoted as A.M. Balch Archives.
HTH.
John.
Not sure about the Hunters but the Typhoons I can answer, all the flying surfaces on the Typhoon go to a default position (central) on shut down, they are not locked or held in position by anything and can be moved by hand or wind.
On the pan gust locks are not normally fitted between flights so if there is a big gust of wind then you will end up with the rudder moving.
HTH,
John.
Looks like it may be losseimouth, by the commentary and the video it is apparent that the port undercarriage collapsed, either not fully deployed or not locked down and couldn’t take the weight on touch down.

John.
A quick search of u-bend brings up a nice trailer for the DVD………

Peter,
The blurb says that the DVD is distributed from the UK, IIRC it is also stocked at quite a few museums, Hendon, Dux and Cosford spring to mind.

Had an e-mail this morning telling me that my copy is now in the post:D:D.
John.
Going this Thursday to fill my boots!!!!.
John.
I echo Matts sentiments, got a few strange lumps of metal for myself and odly the missus has yet to exact her revenge on me:confused: I think she is secretly plotting something:rolleyes:.
A very big thank you to all involved at NAM for getting this off the ground and I look forward to the next one.
Regards,
John.
Paul,
Pleased you enjoyed the Twilight Static run last saturday, if you want to know more about XS458 then bocar is the man you need to get in touch with, send him a pm and I’m sure there will be some more runs comming soon that you would be able to attend.
Regards,
John.
i hope that the RAFM get the specially painted one 🙂 that would be a perfect place for her (except perhaps in civvy hands and flying again… 😉 )
My words exactly Nash, the ‘spotty one’ just has to go to a museum somewhere, if it were to be scraped it would be an absolute traversty.
John.
Ritch&Max and Pure Lightning,
Make sure you give me a nudge and say hello, 6’3″ lump with a lakes Lightnings hat on!!!.
John.
Can’t wait for this one, there seems to be a lack of decent aerojumbles up this way, lets hope it becomes a regular fixture.
Regards,
John.
Nash,
Although the site says that it was last updated on the 29th of August this year I think it is the format that has changed and not the information, it has been like that for a good couple of years now.
It certainly looks like they want to make her a ground runner with engines but looking at the web site it does not fill me with confidence, they have what appears to be the bones of three different airframes, the fuselage itself is heavily stripped out.
Going by what has been said on another thread about re-building to running standard this looks like an impossible task (just have a chat to mjr about the Gatwick bird they are re-building).
Are you going to the twilight re-heat run at Brunty Nashio?.
regards,
John.
Peter,
As far as I know XS457 is just a cockpit section and was stored at Grainthorpe, I was told a couple of years back from one of the guys there that they were going to join XS457 nose with an ex Saudi airframe to make a ground running airframe.
As to what they meant by ground running is up to clarification, it might only have meant making the cockpit electrically live for public display, the Saudi airframe they had there was completely stripped out so getting engines/jetpipes/turbine gearbox and all the miles of wiring and piping together would be an impressive achievement.
Lets not forget that recently three of the full airframes there have moved on to new homes so who knows, something may be in the pipeline.
Best of luck to them all.
Regards,
John.
