Hmm. That’s intriguing isn’t it? These panels are very difficult to get hold of – I would hate to think that some Hunter “restorer” somewhere has taken the opportunity to acquire some this way…

I have to agree, the only reason why a whole panel is removed is for re-sale or self gain, either way there is someone who walks in the circles of aircraft preservation who has stolen these panels.

Whoever did it was successfull to a point, like I previously mentioned there was a bolt hammered into the skin to try and prize off one panel so either they were in a rush or just amateurs.

Lets just hope she dosn’t end up in the same state as the A1 Lightning before something is done.

My little slice of heaven consists of….

A bookshelf stuffed full of engine/airframe manuals and pilots notes
2 X sticktops, throttle box, several bits of instruments
    Lots of books
    Control tower log books
About 40+ airfix/frog/revell/MPC and other make kits
Groundcrew manual for Lightning prototype XA847

All on the EE Lightning:D mostly bought from evil-bay, also from aerojumbles and the like.

Just a heads up on the Humbrol Hunter…..

I passed her today and took this snap with my phone, the gun pack access doors have been stolen along with a couple of other panels from the underside.

It looks like they were removed properly but I saw in the starboard side gun shroud a half inch bolt hammered into the skin in an attempt to prize that off too.

The ground teathers have been cut but she still seems very stable, there was a chair by the starboard wingtip and footprints all over her topside but no apparent damage.

The only positive was that there is now a manned security office just inside the gate to deter would be vandals.

Lets just keep hoping that there is a better future for her, she is in overall good condition and would make a superb static, new canopy and a lick of paint should see her through several years.

    Canberra-tt18

Welcome to the board, yes she was a superb ship, such a shame that we don’t have any flying in the UK on the civil register but thats a whole other story.

I have read the U-2 intercept stories and was amazed at what it took to manage it in the first few cases, good timing and impecable GCI made it possible and after that there were several U-2’s bounced!!.

Well there is the correct assumption that it’s length is to keep it from the fuselage shockwave.

It is also to make for accurate speed readings at all altitudes, the critical thing being the distance between the pitot head and the outlet (on the port side of the fuselage just in front of the cockpit).

The stand-by pitot tube is actually inside the intake just above the radar bullet and was not 100% accurate but sufficient in an emergency.

It is the pitot tube for the air speed indicator.

I can just imagine the crowd on lake Connistone when she is launched for the first tme after the re-build, there will not be an inch of shoreline uncovered.

This is EXACTLY how a project should be run, regular updates and some real progress being made, I am goiing to the lakes this year for for my holidays and will make a trip to the Ruskin museum, hopefully there will be a donation box can drop somethng in.

Best of luck gents, I look forward to sitting on the waters edge watching her go by.
