It’s also worth noting that after a HYD 1 failure the emergency undercarriage lowering is inoperative, and as per card 22 of the frc’s it is clearly stated that upon a HYD 1 and HYD 2 do not attempt to land.
quote…..
If HYD (double) warnings persist:
Do not attempt to land
EJECT when control is lost or when fuel is insufficient for recovery (see Ejection, Card 24R)

Well
1) No services pressure left for the canopy, more than likely why port gear also failed to extend just before hand.
The canopy has an accumulator for the jack in case of hydraulic failure, though i’m certain that in this instance there was such a catastrophic hyd failure that accumulator pressure was rapidly lost followed by undercarriage failure and loss of control.

In that case then, had Dave Stock managed to release the rear fittings, and the lid had lifted away, all be it with probably half of the port screen pillar still attached to it, the seat would have gone immediately without a second pull?

It was my understanding that this happened to the unfortunate pilot of XR721 (Fg Off Derek Law), this is a brief outline of what happened as re-told to me by his wing man on that sortie.
On take off one of the starters exploded and was ingested into the engine causing immidiate failure, flying on one engine the aircraft gained altitude before the second engine finally succumbed to debris and also failed, it was now time to ‘get out’.
Upon pulling the ejection handle the first part of the sequence released the canopy hooks and pulled the shoot bolts but as the bolts retracted the square spigots that are braised to the end of the bolts broke free and remained in their ‘locked’ position therefore preventing the canopy from leaving the airframe.
Having assesed the situation the pilot attempted and made a successfull dead stick landing in a plaughed field, as the airframe slid accross the field the vibration shook the shoot bolt spigots loose and released the canopy, still in forward motion the canopy left the airframe and pulled the interdictor wire free initiating the seat firing sequence, it was at this time that the pilot was ejected into the tree and was well outside the operating envelope of the seat.
The fleet was grounded as a result and immidiate modifications were made to prevent the shoot bolt failure again, as well as braising the spigot to the end a small bolt was fixed through the joint (this also doubled as an open/locked indicator).

John.
This is an admittedly tenuous link to aviation so please feel free to move if theres a better place for it but saw this quite interesting post over on everyones favourite messageboard, 28dayslater.

Does anyone know which Lightning it is in the second shot down?

If your into Dakotas this is staggering
Ww3 huh, must know something we don’t.
Not totally up to speed with the value of models but I really think someone got a bargain here, think about it, this has to be a one off and probably no other like this exsists and look at the stunning workmanship put into it, not to mention the sheer size of it.
I for one would be blown over to own a model of this standard.

For those of you who like a challenge, what have the various large pieces in this picture come from? It looks like there is a TSR-2 windscreen assembly on the table at front right. I am pretty sure the horizontal wing section to the right of the TSR-2 is from an HP Victor. Then there are various large wing chunks, some possibly from a Sabre, some possibly obscurely old. Also a red wing over in the right corner from a light aircraft. Another wing this time yellow from another light aircraft (it might be attached but looks too low down for that). Also possibly a spare TSR-2 tailplane. The various small bits on the tables may be to do with the TSR-2.
Any ideas?
There is a section of EE Lightning wing/flap just hiding behing the tail tip of the P.111:D

I believe EE did investigate in depth the possibilities of fitting Sidewinder, Sparrow, Falcon and Genie missiles, even completing full size wooden mock ups of 2 and 4 sidewinder missile packs.
It was done in late 58 and Sidewinder was still in it’s infancy and didn’t make it preferable over the Blue Jay, other brief investigations included the Nord AS30 missile, Zuni rockets and Napalm, also Bullpup missiles but most of these investigations were just that and never made it past the drawing board.
