Not bad for one that has been re-conditioned, personally I would have thought that an ‘as flown’ one would be more valuable, though just not this valuable!.

A big thankyou to NAM for yet another spot on aeroboot, came home with a few little gems and a stunning Corgi TSR.2 from the well stocked shop.

    Looking forward to Cockpitfest!.

Thankyou for clearing that up Bruce, when I use the term museum, I use it to include all that help Andre’s team as I am sure they are a collective and without each other where would they be now?.

Everyone deserves credit where credit is due and without the museums commitment to allowing teams to house such airframes then there would be more metal for the scrap men.

If comments are borne of experiences then maybe this isn’t the place to air them?.

I am surprised that you seem to be questioning the museums ‘forethought’ in this matter of ground equipment, they already have considerable experience in the running of the victor and would no doubt be able to take on the Nimrod without too much trouble, if any at all.

As stated they have made it publically known that it will be a ground runner, no one would make such a claim without prior knowledge of exactly what is happenning there in terms of GE and the funding for ground running.

We should be thanking all at Elvington for making such a commitment to her preservation as without such commitment our aviation herritage will slowly dwindle to nought and then we can spend all our time on this new fangled interweb moaning about it!

So has the ground support equipment been purchased too? Towing arm, suitable houchin, special tools, jacking pads and adaptors, etc?

Reading between the lines here but Elvington have publically stated that they will keep her ground running, this being the case then I am sure they will either already have a certain amount of ground equipment or it is most certainly in the pipeline.

Oh and a very well done to Elvington for securing her future.

why there’s nothing left in it !! it sits on its tail because the radar equipment was nicked !!

As far as cockpit sections go she is a fairly good starting point!, I have seen much, much worse dragged out from the depths of a scrapyard and lovingly restored into award winning cockpits.

As for the tail sitting, she was cut inboard of the wings when moved to Balderton, the mainwheels were not safe anymore so they fabricated a support frame under the ventral tank, the fuselage still contains all the internals, engines, inter pipes and jet pipes and weighs a fair bit!.

As time went on and parts were stolen the weight forced the frame through the ventral tanks and she sank back on her tail, all she is good for now is nose section for salvage and then scrap the rest, all the internals would now just be boxes of dust!.

There are no doubt ‘some’ salvageable spare in the fuselage but whoever takes her on would have to have large pots of cash even just to cut her and remove from site.

It is a crying shame she went that way but she never got the best start when they chopped the wings the way they did, you just can’t save them all.

    Woodbridge,

‘new’ Lightning?, not possible as the Lightning was designed and built in the 50’s, if you modernized it to any extent you would end up with a completely new airframe that would loose all the character and charm of the original.

You are right about the Saudi airframes but shamefully BAE left them to languish in open storage and they suffered big time, they were moved on and some were used as props in a film (Wing Commander I think) and some found there way to museums, the most notable is the one at Gatwick aviation museum which is slowly and impressively being returned to ground running condition.

And to your last, yes, theoretically you could build a two seat from a single as all that changed was the front fuselage section from the transport joint forwards, it was never done in service and to my mind has never been done to a static airframe for display, if you were to take a single seat airframe and try to mate a twin tub to it you would just end up trashing the airframe, not worth it!!.

    HTH,

    John.

    Tim,

The aircraft have a finite amount of time in the hanger before they are returned to the hard standing, the hemp scheme seems to me the most sensible and cost effective option to get the job done prior to the May open day.

Also the camo scheme would no doubt cost a little more to do and when this money is coming from someones own pocket lets be thankful that she is getting some TLC, it has to be said though that IMHO the hemp scheme is just as good as the rest (ducks for cover), it was her operational scheme and is just as historical as the rest.

    John.
