One item not mentioned so far is making sure that your Firmware for the 400D is kept up to date, there is a new update not long out which makes it the third Firmware update that has been released for the 400D so far.

The latest version for the 400D is Ver 1.1.1 and here is a link to it below
    http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosdigital3/e4kr3_firmware-e.html

I was not happy at all at first with my 400D due to the exposure problems I was getting with sunshine on white surfaces, photos were turning out far too dark and the grass had a red/brown tint in it.

I figured out that changing to CENTRE WEIGHTED metering and altering the picture style from STANDARD to NEUTRAL helped quite a lot.

Nowadays I’m much happier with the Camera and do not experience the exposure issues that I used to in the past.

I would presume that keeping the Firmware up to date has had quite a bit to do with the improvement that I have had with the Camera, when it came out there were so many gripes from folk about exposure problems but that seems to have died away a lot from what I hear from friends and read on web site.

Another fantastic colection Fred how much is the tour and was the trip all in expencive to do

Looks another fantastic place to visit

    Regards

    Peter

The tour Bus was 8 chuffers and lasted about 1 hour so worth the sum I would say.

There was 6 of us so that kept the costs down, al Hotels were ETAP’s so again that helped on expenses.

These shots you took from the terrace (THY, Aeroflot) … did you have to
use photoshop to adjust any tone or remove reflections ? I mean, how bad
is the tinted glass …. does it make it difficult to take decent moving shots ?

    Hello Woody,
The glass is a wee bit on the green side and the only one I shot was a Cityjet 146 which actually looked not too bad at all so it wouldn’t be difficult to remove the tint in Photoshop.

It was mainly Bizjets that were landing which I don’t shoot much of and anyway there is a distance issue with those from the Terrace and they don’t taxi about turn and come any closer for parking, it’s either park on the other side of the Runway or trundle along to nearer the end and park there.

You could shoot arrivals from the Terrace through the Glass I suppose but there are other spots on the Field that are better in my opinion. Another tricky one is there is a mid Field Terminal right in front when you are on the Terrace just at the angle for square on and they often go behind it, turning on the links is okay though.

The Aeroflot and Turkish departures were not taken from the Terrace but at another vantage point further along, only got about 45 minutes there and it was quiet mid day.

As the sun moves around ealier in the day at this time of the year we headed back to the Terminal about 11-30 and spent some time on the old Spectators Terrace.

I had always wanted to see what the Airside Photo Tourbus was like and spend some time at the Runway intersection so all of us went on the 1pm Tour.

Unfortunately the sun at this time is very high so photos were a bit of a struggle, the first Bus goes out at 11am which would have been better for sun angle but this 1pm Tour had the best chance of shooting the interesting Widebodies.

In the 30 minutes or so standing at the special spot next to the Runways there were two Swiss A330’s, Singapore 777-300, Thai A340-600 and three mid size Airbuses so it was a good time to go.

It’s mainly the Widebodies that use Runway 16 so you can go out there at times and not shoot hardly anything departing on that Runway. All of these except the Swiss A320 departed from Runway 16.

    Fred.

This T Cook A330 was under going maintenance and departed a few hours later.

Ah yes I should have recognised the overhead Airport view as Heathrow, pity the sun wasn’t on the other side of the aircraft it would have helped with the photo.

Peter, there was no sign of a Saudi 747 on the Field mainly lots of tightly parked Bizjets.

In answer to the questions above we arrived at Zurich late on Tuesday 22nd and departed at 1pm on Thursday 24th.

I shot the landers on Runway 14 using a Canon 400D and Canon 100-400mm lense through the fence, there were no holes in it so by carefully placing the lense flush against the fence wire and shooting square on it tuned out the wire.

I deliberately moved about 100 yards further along from where I originally started shooting as the fence curved slightly which gave me a more square on view to the kind of backgrounds I was looking for, you don’t want to be shooting at an angle through these fences otherwise it will show as dull patches.

Here is a couple of views of where I was standing, this spot really is best with a 100-400mm lense as you are shooting most aircraft about 300mm and the big lense is push-pull which helps.

Canon’s 70-300mm IS lense turns to focus and you would have to be careful not to let it touch the fence or it would tend to lose sharp focus on the subject. It could be done though with care.

    Hello Kevin,
We did the 1pm Airside Bus tour which was the perfect time to do it for what departed when we were there but the sun was right overhead so no use, I’ll have a look at them later anyway and see what I can do with them.

The timing was great there were three Swiss including an A330, Singapore 777-300 and the Thai A340-600. All departed right in front of us after we got off the bus.

It was 8 Swiss CHF’s for the Airside Bus Tour if I remember corrrectly or as one of the guys put it “8 chuffers”.

I took some viewing shots as well so I may Post those later as well.

Actually I wasn’t too bad at all I had my Rucksack with the gear in a bin bag folded over to keep it dry and an umbrella sitting over it, had an even bigger brolly over my head and the wellies kept my feet dry.

Yesterday was the first time I had properly used the Canon 100-400mm lense and Camera body “rain jacket” I bought on ebay and what a difference it made. No need to worry about rain getting in and my big lense hood kept the rain from getting on to the front of the lense, most important to keep that dry or the pictures look soft.

I would recommend buying one the these camera “rain jackets” it’s far better than a towel of a polly bag.

Yes RAB that one and the Blue Panorama 767 were probably the best two displays of the day.

It’s so much better to get these kind of shots with arrivals than departures, worth getting wet for to get soemthing a little different. At least rain means you don’t lose your photos to heat haze.

I’m definetly tempted to go for one, mibbe on one of those 12 month deals, the 10D is still good though even at 6mp.

Gonna have to finish paying for this baby first though, might catch you on the mound sometime soon Fred as I shoot some moving action…

That’s some piece of kit you must be able to get great footage with it, a nice sunny day at Prestwick with plenty of Freighters would give it a good runout from the Mound.

I bought a Rode external Microphone for my Hi8 Camcorder but found that it recommends going into the Camcorder software and reducing the VU to about 75% but I don’t have that facility and after some testing at PIK I find the soundtrack too rumbly.

I’m really interested in an HD Camcorder but it’s outwith my budget just now. My Hi8 has 400 lines but the HD ones are 1080 lines, I’m itching to see actual footage from one of these to compare. An item for the future.

    Hi Fred,

Do you have anymore of EI-DLE from Tuesday? My friend was in it doing base training.

Yes I shot quite a few of EI-DLE when it was in the circuit for about 3 hours, here is one of it with the derelict white 747 in the background.

Very nice Fred, you’ve got me thinking of getting a 400D now.

Good stuff Fred, I almost came out of retirement myself this week. Hmmm… A guy I work with got a 400D last week, seems pretty good, if very small.

    Maybe, just maybe… ?

    Hello Guys,
DJ when I was thinking of buying a 400D about 4 months ago a friend sent me this link for price comparison which still works, I found it handy to check some places out to see if they had it in stock.

    http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod191.html

Ren the body is much smaller than the likes of a 10D to 30D and looks tiny on a Canon 100-400mm but I’ve had no issues with it adapting to the reduced size compared to what I was using before and it’s my No1 camera particularly with it being 10MP files.

I’m impressed with the censor cleaning it’s very effective. When I was checking out my shots from last Tuesday I found a noticeable dirt spot on one and immediately checked forward a few to see if it was in the ones that followed but it was gone pretty much straight away.

Every time you power off it cleans the censor, it comes up saying “Cleaning censor” on the LCD.

these shots are really good! i may have to pay a visit to these airports one say, you have some really interesting angles going on there.

any advice on viewing locations to visit / avoid?

    Sam

The favourite spot by far at Prestwick is the “Mound” just up from the Control Tower and most of the ones in my Post were taken there (ie North American 767, Tornado, Transavia 737 etc).

In Winter time the sun is good from about 9-30am onwards and before that it is a bit backangled if Runway 31 is in use which is the predominant one.

In Summer time I don’t usually go until about 12pm because the sun starts off right down the Runway and takes longer to get behind you but from then on it is good until about 6pm so you get a long day out.

I sometimes use Monkton on the North side that looks back ito the Terminal area but that is only good if it’s cloudy otherwise the sun is in front, that spot is also better for water spray shots on a rainy day.

Both ends of the Runway give good angles and if you go to the Runway 13 end for 31 departures there is a Railway embankment with raised ground to stand on and shoot departures, heavy 747 departures are excellent from there and you get a really nice action shot from that spot.

The embankment is also good for lineup shots on Runway 13 although you can go across the road and shoot them from closer at the Crash gate.

Prestwick is a great place to go if you time it knowing that you will see some Freighters which is where keeping an eye on Flight Tracker comes in handy.

    Fred.
