    Farnborough 1972 , when I was 10.

I can remember seeing the Red Arrows in Gnats and the Patrouille de France in Magisters , and being very impressed by the noise of the Viggen.

I can also remember a mock battle at the end , with Andovers and Wessexes bringing in troops , with Harriers (I think) giving air support.

In my spotting days (late 70s) , I was once at Bristol Lulsgate on a misty Saturday morning with very little happening , when 6 German Army CH-53s appeared out of the murk , flying slowly down the runway in line astern. They all landed , refuelled and then departed again.

I seem to remember that I found out later that they were taking part in an exercise on Salisbury Plain.

Here are a few flights that I am glad I took while it was still possible :-

1984 British Airways Trident Heathrow – Manchester and return

    1985 Olympic 707 Rhodes – Athens

1986 CTA Caravelle Gatwick – Zurich and return

1986 British Midland Viscount 1hr pleasure flight from East Midlands

1986 Euroair Herald 1hr pleasure flight from Gatwick , including taking part in the Badminton Airday airshow !

I do regret not starting my interest in aviation early enough to fly in a Comet or a VC10 , though.

You are right , it wasn’t a radar. Apparently , it was an IR sensor for ICBM detection.

There is some further information here :-

If anyone is interested , that photo was taken directly outside the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field , Seattle.

There is a Boeing Military Division complex next to the museum. When I was there a couple of years ago , there was a 767 with a large dorsal radar fairing there , as well as this 757.
