New Legends 2013 thread needed ?
The list off that site is pretty conclusive – recent additions aside.
Also, the number worldwide goes up if you include the two/three Seafires….
Ok so including the only seafire im aware of in Europe and i don’t know much but is under repair after a wheels up landing in France that makes 32 plus another 6 that are under major refurbishment not listed as flying/resting/temp grounded so i cant tell 38 is it. Mark 12 says nearer 50 there’s plenty of websites but non seem to be that up to date ? so im missing 10 to 18 aircraft. The original question was in near Europe or the UK airworthy Spits 😉
Your words not mine.
That is world-wide.
Try the Spitfire Survivors web page
Mark
yer thats where the list came from plus the 2 others on here so what about the remaining 20 or so then others must no ?
Mark credit where its due to many people on forums these days are quick to put posters down this one is different which is why i like it as opposed to other rivals
Grounded for a couple of weeks for a minor repair or service.
Accident damage actively being repaired but lasting in to months.
Northern Hemisphere winter maintenance.
Etc. Etc.
That’s why you need the definitions. 🙂
Mark
So Mark i guess you are the Spitfire expert on here ? as quoted you reckon on 51 in UK and near Europe would appreciate it if you could post the identities of the others as well as my 30 or so as i would like to get an accurate list. I know some are under deep maintainance or accident repairs but could you add these as they are airworthy although grounded temporarily and not museum pecies i know its a big ask:dev2: :diablo:
Chris
The listing was dated April 2012.
By my definition there are 51 Spitfires I consider airworthy as of today..but as the overhaul of AB910 progresses in to 2013 and possibly beyond that number will reduce.
Mark
After a quick look at the http://www.i-tri.co.uk/survivors/Database1.asp web site i found 30 please add the others on the bottom if anyone can as a full definitive up to date list of nearby flying European aircraft would be good ?

AE977 Hurricane 1
FE788 Harvard 2
43-29854 L4 Cub
are all those at Biggin Hill ?
Been doing a lot of research on my family over the past few years along with help from other relatives have managed to trace my family (mothers side) to 1141 with all sorts of interesting twist and turns.
As for WW2 My Mums Dad (Grandad 1) worked on building parts for Mosquito’s in a piano factory at Stoke Newington, Nan worked in ammunition and guns at the Woolwich Arsenal so im told. Nan 1’s brother served in the Royal Navy and at one point so im told was involved on Russian Convoys. My Mum remembers Nan saying “them police have turned up again to take him back” Torpedoed twice in one night on different ships and survived he spent 18 months recovering in the USA. Proving difficult here as the only evidence i have of him being alive is a birth Certificate, and change of name document ( another story from WW1 ?) I have been informed that if he was an Air gunner and deployed on Merchant ships there would be no record !!!!
Dad side is even better. (Grandad 2) was a fireman in London during the Blitz and drove buses. Nan 2’s brother was in the RAF joining in 1921/22 and worked alongside Churchill in photo reconnassence iam trying to get his service record from Cranwell but it is proving difficult. Brother 2 was a dispatch rider serving with 11 group from October 1940 he has just died so am now getting to grips with service records.
Mum & Dad still have there gas masks and case, ration books and other stuff issued to there family’s in London in WW2.
Chris
Snows Out !
As its nearly time for this Diary to end and a new 2013 to begin thought it would be appropriate to post some images of Duxford in December. Can’t tell you when they were but certainly look festive and credit to those who took the photo’s as their not mine.

Merry Christmas and thank’s to all who make this forum a joy to read with their photo’s, comments and humerus banter
Chris
would be interesting to see a similar project for Berlin from say 1943 to 1945
Im surprised the elf & safety didn’t come out with their snow risk assessment and ban anyone from leaving the shop !
I am sure you are right. That’s why they re-entered service until finally grounded.
wasn’t that more to do with the other side of the Channel than this side if you get my gist !
Yer thats a no brainer, Duxford!!
I just didn’t want to presume that that’s all — home of the RAF operational Spitfire 30+ in a line up along with a few non flyers that would be a hela flightline walk !!!! :diablo: :dev2: 😎
I agree with that not bored at all please show more more more :D.
And here is a question/wish/idea how about organising an airshow along the lines of a gathering of Legends and Mustangs style for Spitfires. There must be at least 30+ Europe wide airworthy now with as many veterans as could be gathered the only question would be were to hold it ?
