Actually I,m a bit biased towards EAW (European Air War).A very active modding community and one of the few games where you don,t need a Cray supercomputer to put a hundred or so aircraft in the air at the same time.Just flew a fighter sweep in a 109 with Me110,s Hurris and Spits intercepting.at least a hundred planes all up.started at 15000 feet but soon developed into a lowish level furball.Bagged a few but flew into my wingmans firing solution on a Hurricane at low level. No chance…:(
Very poignant to understand that game over in real life is fatal..To all the ones who did it in real life..Your sacrifices are well remembered.
A bit like a Farnsies concert..
Read the last paragraph here… http://www.landings.com/_landings/pacflyer/dec5-2007/Dn-24-aussies-retire-huey.html
We still get the whupp sounds via the Westpack rescue chopper up here but they fly a lot higher than the army used to.
other hit factories..
Which factory was it that was hit the hardest. Was it Frazier Nash??A vague spark of memory asks??
Nice pic…
AOC 2nd TAF, Harry Broadhurst’s personal Storch, possibly the one lost to a celebratory very pistol shot on the night the the Air Force was grounded – VE Day.
I bet that went down well…”Ooooerrrr b()gger,sorry sir!!!”:o
hydraulics.
Having multiple legs retract at the same time without proper valves causes severe cavitation problems as the legs hydraulic fluids “fight’ each other on their way up.Have seen it myself on a homebuilt and it doesn,t look all that comfortable for the aircraft.:D
Parts.
Boxes of scraps and parts recovered from the fields out at Oakey.Remembering these came from famous planes who defended Darwin and Australia during WW2.
Books…
“The encyclopedia of Aircraft” is my most loved ,and used set of tomes. For monetary value non aviation is “Tigers on the Western Front” by Jean Restayn. Also a treasured and touching book is “Spitfire, flying legend” by John Dibbs and Tony Holmes.Bought by an overseas mate of my ex boss, signed and given to me as a gift.Aviation passion know no bounds.
Theiving so an so,s..
They do look like MkIX mainwheels.:D
Done..
Didn,t want to jump the gun in case it wasn,t true.Alas it is..First saw a “real” spitfire was with him piloting the MkVIII at the Moree air show about 25 years ago.
Cheers Daz…
Found it!!!Will do some Skulking next time I,m there…Skulk,skulk,skulk…..
What we did…
Out at where our project is at MAAM at Oakey we had the same trouble with mountains of stuff in storage that would probably go in the skip. What we did was a stocktake of everything, note down stuff that we could keep and use then put the rest of the stuff onto a CD then pass it onto other museums around the country to see if they needed anything off it.Some was sold off or donated and what we have now is a controlled stock of parts and a lot fuller array of museums in the country.
A spare cowl perchance..
Interesting..A replacement??
I love the smell of Model glue in the morning…
Had a couple of Airfix models in my youth. As many tried them all,Revell,Hasegawa,Tamiya,Dragon,Monogram,MDC,Italirie and the newer stuff from Trumpeter (woohoo).Haven,t had the time last couple of years to get into them even though my modelling bench is right next to my computer desk.About to reconstruct and superdetail a Guillows 1/24th scale P39 wooden framed kit a mate was going to throw out.Scratchbuilt heaven.I wouldn,t be playing with the real things if it wasn,t for Airfix and the olde brigade.
Take your pick,there are a few stories….
Thanks for the pic Mk12.The Australian post magazine is always held in high regard here in Auss.I can,t comment on how/why Bill did what he did as it was before my time. But it has always been for the good of the industry here in Auss and has contributed to virtually every major restoration project on the continent. The 5 Spits mentioned went to a wrecking yard here in town, broken up and sent south for smelting. There is a pic somewhere of them coming into town on the back of lorries.Think there were three Beaus scrapped. One had crashed and then scrapped, one was set alight and don,t know about the other.
Trailing everything down will take some effort but a rumor is a rumor till proven otherwise.!
Sshhh it,s a secret..
You know us inspired farmers will try anything to get a faster, better sprayer together these days..Hand me the wrench,I think I can get a tad more speed out of this Merlin oh and the reodrive could be made to spin faster so the fertilizer will spread quicker..:)
