Think another tactic was to go high and dive through the formation, shooting as you go,diving away to reclimb and reposition for another attack. It all sounds good in theory but when there are groups of P51,s hanging about it was get in quick, take the shot and skidoo outa there before the bloodthirsty Merlins are on your tail. The Zestorers were primarily used to try and break up the formations. The fighters being used to pick off stragglers as they tried to limp home. The head on approach resulted in the bigger danger to bomber crews as a few cannon rounds in the cockpit area resulted in a pretty high chance of success of downing bomber.Remember with a 30mm it only took two to three hits to do serious damage to a B17.The battles were bloody and the pilots and crew on both sides were heros .
Have you also considered resin casting the projectiles?Get a set of 10 done up in a master then pour merrily away with the resin. Most modelling stores have resin casting sets for the detail freaks making up their own plane bits. 😉
Was talking to an old mate of mine who has been in the bizz for over thirty odd years and he suggested have a look at Pilatus Porter wheels and tyres.Never know till you try..
Possibly??
Going slightly off the thread.Royal Air Force Pilots serving in other countries(Australia),serving in a RAF unit(54Squadron) under RAAF command.Where would their history be kept?

True that weird things turn up.We found a couple of Aircraft parts in the big September cleanup with big stars and cryllic on them.
How they got into an Australian Army Aviation
Museum beats me..I would go with Beau/fighter/fort bomber.
