some artwork here – I’ve touted this WWW site before, I like this stuff, especially the “what if’s”.

the guy posts on the secret projects forum, I’m sure if you contact he’ll say where he got the details for the scheme from, may have been a picture

    Hi BSG-75,

Not seen that site before, and the Whirlwind there with the stripes on the wings is in incorrect ‘Operation Starkey’ colours. The white bands should cover the roundels.

There is and ‘Operation Starkey’ site but even on there the info is obscure. Which is why some of us have been chasing photos instead.

    All the best,

    Steve.

    Hi Jerry; (Joe, here)
Here are some notes related to your interests..
    I see #s 6844; 6845; 6969; 6976; 6981; 6984; 6997; 7002; 7011; 7048; 7055; 7062; 7110; 7113; and 7116. A couple of dfferent (nice & clear) photos of crash of 6976/ HE-X, on 1/41. Some armament shots including loading bombs, and 4 x 20mm cannon setup, and single 37mm nose cannon. Probably a half dozen or more different shots of 263 Sqn groups in front of various Whirlwinds.

    Hi Joe,

Any photos of Whirlwinds in ‘Operation Starkey’ colours? If it helps this is often incorrectly referred to as the ‘Dieppe Raid’.

    All the best,

    Steve.

    P.S.
Just did a quick web search google and interestingly this site claims it was still visible in the scrapyard in the 60’s ?.

    Hi Jerry,

That was part of the blurb that I put out when I released the Whirlwind for X-Plane. However It’s not made up. I did come across some info which suggested that that was the case, and that the scrapyard in question was cleared in the late 60s.

    All the best,

    Steve.

The version I have has got an alternative musical score. Oh dear! The opening sequence with the Heinkels does nothing for me with THAT music.

    .

    Hi Tony,

I don’t agree, although I think that the Goodwin score is one of his best, it turns the film into a bit of a ‘Boys’ Own Adventure’. The Walton score adds a gravitas more in keeping with the subject matter of the film (discuss).

And no it’s not an age thing I was nine when the film was released, and it continues to be one of my favourites.

    All the best,

    Steve.

Just wondering and I probably no it would never be allowed what with the recent dc3 flight ban. Would there be a chance for NX611 having seats installed and having flights in a lanc like at cwh?

    Hi Peter,

Not on the UK register, but I suppose it could be registered aboard. As I understand it (and someone here will correct this I’m sure) it would only have to make one flight out of the UK each year to maintain an overseas reg. and operate in the UK?

In Oz we have the Limited category which is designed for the specific commercial operation of Ex military Warbirds of any size. I believe that the US has similar arrangements. Does Canada, or is the Lanc on a CofA?

The Grace spitfire “Incident” was mentioned on a couple of different forums, this one included. however the thread on this forum had to be removed on behalf of the owner.

    Morning Peter,

Well it’s a lovely sunny day here in Oz. I am fully aware of the thread, and the thread about the missing thread both here and on WIX that were subsequently removed. This is the first time that I have seen a response from the ‘Management’ of this site as to why this happened. WIX had the courtesy to explain to its members within the hour of the removal.

One thing concerns me above all others though in your reply ‘the thread on this forum had to be removed’. What does Caroline have on you guys?:):):):):)

    All the best,

It seems to me that in order for the Grace Spitfire to gain any financial input from this sale, they would have to take ownership of the said part and admit that it came from their Spitfire. This of course would mean that the aircraft had had an accident which resulted in a broken propeller!

Now you would have thought that if such an accident had befallen this aircraft that we would all have heard about it, maybe by reading a thread about the incident on this site. However since no thread seems to be in existence I can only conclude that the piece in question does not come from the Grace Spitfire, and that therefore they could have no financial claim on it.

    Censorship works both ways……;)

    All the best.

    Many thanks Anne.

I wonder what it is doing in Australia?

Does that link with the service of these aircraft?

    Mark

Would I be right in saying that the photo was taken in my local Museum, the South Australian Aviation one out at Port Adelaide? Looks like the new restoration wing as well.

Been watching this thread for a few months now, so here goes, this is me ….

Ex Pom who married an Aussie, and living in the Adelaide Hills. Been here three years now and got my PPL at Parafield. Also a Whirlwind fanatic hence I made two very accurate ones for the flight sim X-Plane recently.
