Hi Daz,
I know it’s there in the Christopher Plummer sequence, and also I think at the end of the Michael Caine sequence? I also have a Hurricane in some out takes crashing into the sea (this may have been used in Dark Blue World as well). All I am suggesting is that it was one of the pre-production test models and maybe even test footage.
Mick Charles and the model crew did not make any Hurricanes as far as I am aware. Of course any of you who are in the UK could always call into his shop and ask him.
I also think that the exploding Hurricane footage is used in A Piece of Cake.
All the best,
Steve
Do we get to find out where then?
Hi Hunterxf382,
Not meaning to be obtuse. I have mentioned this footage before on another B of B thread. It’s 8mm and owned by Stuart Uwings (sp?) who ran Skyleadrer Radio Control at Croydon. He flew the aircraft with the model unit for the duration, and did a presentation evening for the model club in 1980?. About 30mins of film and 200 or so slides. Very interesting. This film was made by the individuals involved as a record, and for marketing purposes. None of this was used in the B of B film, although it (Stuart’s) does contain some footage transferred from the movie.
Daz,
You mention the exploding Hurricane, which I have always thought was odd since only Spitfires, Buchons, and He111s were made for the movie. However way before production started some R/c test aircraft were built to see if it was possible to use them. A Hurricane and a Me110 were constructed (maybe a Stuka as well?) and I can only assume that the exploding Hurricane is from the original pre-production test footage!
All,
So where can you see all of the footage shot for the movie?
http://www.worldbackgrounds.com
Search for spitfire.
They have 50 hours of B of B movie footage in a mixture of 70mm and 35mm stock. Quite a bit (6-7 hours) is downloadable but the quality is a bit iffiy.
If you ask them nicely or offer them money they may send it to you on DVD. I think that Moggy may have done this. Ask him.
A contact was sending me all of it on DVD but he left WB after forwarding the first two DVDs. Note to self, must contact them again.
I used to work in the industry and looking through that much footage is a daunting task however much you like Spitfires and Buchons.
All the best,
Steve
There’s some much better film unit 8mm footage floating around that’s not made it onto YouTube.
And radio controlled model footage as well!
Steve
Great shot. You can almost hear those (dummy) cannon blazing away!
Also a shot that should be in the “How Low Can You Go?” thread…
I don’t know about that, but maybe this one could.
All the best,
Steve
Just for you Daz, oh and anyone else who’s interested. Buchon with strobe cannons firing.
All the best,
Steve
Hi Daz,
I’ve got some out takes with them firing, but check out the Battle of France straffing run. In the first shot of the Me 109s look at the a/c on the left. Those look like strobe cannons to me.
All the best,
Steve
Hi
If Germany then possibly somewhere near Rechlin ?
Probably the remains of Brown’s a/c, (P7095) that was sent there.
Cheers
Jerry
Hi Jerry,
You could well be right. I had forgotten about the alleged fuselage and Wyvernfan jogged my memory. This would have been around 2000, but it all seemed a bit iffy and there were no pictures available either so I didn’t follow it up. Who knows?
All the best.
Steve
Ok thanks LL… i wasn’t sure if the RAF museum had anything substantial tucked away.
ps.. any pics around of the surviving rear fuselage.?
The RAF/RAFM have nothing of any note of which I am aware (others may know more), and in my opinion have much to answer for by way of what has not been preserved or they have allowed to be scrapped.
I did a few years ago come across some references about a preserved rear fuselage in a European museum, Germany I think, but the museum had at that time been closed for a while and I have seen no mention of it since. So presumed it was just a rumor. Perhaps there is more?
Don’t you just love this Forum? Two threads about our favorite Treasure Hunt running at the same time. Now where is Indiana Jones when you need him?
Happy hunting.
Steve
My thanks to everyone, again very interesting reading, but then anything Whirly related is always interesting… 😉
Sounds like a Time Team Special to me, can just see it, Summer dig, History of the Whirlwind, Fred Ballam from Westlands and Steve Vizzard from AA as the invited experts… 😀
Anyone know Tony Robinson …
Stuart…
Hi Stuart,
Can’t believe that I’ve walked over this spot every year for the last ten or so years training CCF cadets in mountain walking skills. We’d have taken some shovels and a metal detector if I’d known.
Bu**er…..
Steve
The only Westland Whirlwinds flying anywhere in the world recently have been models or virtual ones like this one I did for X-Plane, see attached .jpg.
The TV show sounds interesting though.
All the best
Steve
……..England…. not the country to live in anymore!
Could not agree more.
Steve.
Hi All,
I think that it is amazing that after all this time we are still finding out new stuff about this aircraft. Keep it coming.
All the best,
Steve
Hi Dave,
I seem to remember quite a few of the Thorp Park aircraft ended up at Brooklands, not sure if that was one of them though.
Steve
Hi Folks,
I popped into Duxford whilst I was in the UK at Easter ( felt I had to start the indoctrination for my seven month old son early ) and noticed that in one of the hangars was the camera nose from “Dolly” the B25 used to film “Memphis Belle”, and “A Piece of Cake”. Despite the fact that the aircraft left for sunnier shores some years ago.
Just wondered why it was still there really?
Anybody.
Steve
Hi Folks,
Went to see ‘Over the Front’ at the Australian War Memorial, and very good it was too.
Steve.
