Just to repeat the title of this tread ‘Is it me?’ and ‘why? for heavens sake was the museums director deprived of hanging his airfix models from the ceiling by his mum,and is reaking his revenge on us now or is it that with the average height of the population increasing year on year they think ‘ yea one day someone will be able to look into the cockpit again!’…..Do you know what other rare A/C we will only be able to see the underside of in the new hanger? 😡

Ashley your not suggesting that the replica P-51 which most members of the public wouldn’t notice as being a replica be replaced with a perfectly good servicable aircraft?….shame on you,you will be saying next that it’s alright for the IWM to hang the very rare TSR2 from the ceiling next (as if they would!!) 😮

I suppose you think that they just kick the tyres and put in some gas.

i think Digby has it spot on, most people on here seem to think that maintaining a collection the size of TFC’s is easy, and that Stephen Grey has a bottom-less pot of money!
To think with out TFC there would be no P-47,hellcat, wildcat, tigercat, etc, not to mention Flying Legends(mind you that wouldn’t bother Lanceman!)we would probably still be watching mass formations of Harvards.
Not gripping about to many spits or mustangs.or pointless balbos!! of 30 plus rare warbirds

If you look at TFCs current restorations: Beaufighter (Due to be the only flying example in the world)
Gladiator (Due to be one of only two flying in the world)
    Sea Fury (stock restoration)
    P-51C (RARE example, stock restoration)
    P-39 (with genuine war record)
    Fiat CR42 Falco
all this has to be paid for and I don’t see the lottery fund stepping forward to keep the mossie ‘for the nation’ maybe some people on this forum should start a fund they may just be able to by a new pot of glue! :p

    RE: Mustangs – Confession Time

The Candyman / Moose Scheme was derived from the Aircrafts previous air racing days when the overall paintwork was red and the A/C was just called ‘Candyman, and the 357th scheme of Myron Becraft’s ‘Moose’.
The current P-51D with TFC is a more historic A/C, having served with the 8th USAAF in the 78th Fighter group, which were based at Duxford.
So you can see why TFC aquired the A/C.

    RE: Bristol Fighter

TFC did have a fuselage section on loan from Hendon a few years ago to use as a guide.Unfotunatly the example in Hendon is not as complete as you think as somre of the access hatches don’t existwhich doesn’t really matter that much on a static display. So TFC are having to fabricate them from scratch.
Also the engines available I believe powered the Bristol Freighter and I don’t think they are a staight forward replacement
The Beau had a three bladed propeller where as the freighters are a four blader, again not straight forword.

Rant…Rant…Rant (Sore point!) Would any one know if the aircraft going into HENDON were plastic. Think of the advantages less load hanging from the ceiling, they don’t corrode, most of ‘Joe’ public would never notice and we get to see the originals on the ground or possibly back in the air!
