It seems that some nuts and bolts (eg, AS1242 HTS bolts) are gold Cad. Not sure if this finish was present during WW2 or if this came later.

Some will be brass – near compasses. These are tinned (but not always?). If you don’t have a schedule of spares to tell you which ones are brass, I can say that all loose nuts and bolts securing the bits to the blind flying panels on the Vampire are brass (or stainless steel in the case of the nuts, washers and stud fittings for the isolator mounts). Not sure about the arrangement with the standby compass. I have tried interpreting AP.970 (engineering requirements) on this topic, but to me it is a little ambiguous.

I typed a response, NewQldSpitty, and the forum spat the dummy!

We had a quote that probably would have been resonable – have to go to China otherwise – that would have been about +160% on the NZ item. This was a trade so we both got something out of it.

While all the searching has been time consuming, there have been plenty of benefits. The box mentioned on my 10th April post was a very nicely priced buy with much of it good as back-up for airworthy. Just the boss was broken on that too.

We thought of a built-up repair – cheap on purchased parts but very time consuming in fitting.

Any leads on any parts up your way?

The Striker and Fencer photo I included above is from here:

This also includes a few other good ones.

Obtaining copies from small organisations can be understandably difficult. Large or small in general cannot trust loads. Large (public or corporate) should either have facilities or be able to more easily arrange for copies but there are the other obstacles. I also volunteer at/work with small volunteer organisations and it certainly is very difficult.

Me too. 542 was a 618 Sqn aircraft disposed of at Narromine (Australia). I didn’t realise she was a trials aircraft, but anyway I can only imagine she was delivered for shipment in the same config as the other 618 Sqn Highballs. It would be very unhelpful to include some ‘mongrel’ config.

Last I heard was that not much is happening until a new owner is found. Is that right?

Thanks to new-found friends in NZ, we now have a NOS undercarriage lever boss for Vampire FB.9 R1382.

The problem of broken lugs on these parts remains for A79-175 and A79-733, so looking for two more, but these are further along the queue!

    Cheers

    Hi Geoff.

We looked at these aircraft a fair bit before on the forum. This is a good thread where Ed (powerandpassion) takes us through his discoveries:

    https://www.key.aero/forum/historic-aviation/3856669-618sq-mosquito-hig…

Ed continues with his passion, but wont come back to the forum despite my encouragements. Another toll of the forum hiccups.

There is another version of the photo above at Geoff Goodall’s sight – you can see more of the aircraft. Scroll down near the bottom:

Here is a good one. Sorry to the owner that I can’t credit it properly. I think it was a website oriented at the ships.

Ah, Hind… I almost lost my lower jaw, thinking it was referring to a biplane!

I agree. I guess one important question is ‘what is the level of access to the archives.’ This is no reflection on the importance of what the Aviation Archive people are doing, but may dampen the interest from potential supporters who know how hard (or impossible) it can be to actually get copies of certain material in some archives… not naming any in particular!!!

More pubs added… Including AP970, some Goblin manuals, an Australian compressor parts book, and the Mistral parts book.

Some of these pdfs are large!

    Cheers.

The website is active, although April of this year might not be active enough for some. There was an article about their recent activities in the RAeS magazine. Not sure which issue, but I only received it a couple of months ago – maybe being down under, that doesn’t mean much, with the deluge of Covid home shopping parcels that dominate all freight services these days – and I passed it on to a friend.

Anyway it mentioned a survey of archives and provided this web address:  https://www.aviationarchives.uk/Guide_to_the_Archives_of_Aircraft_Manuf…

I had a look through it – all happening enough for me – quite an effort!

Ah yes. Thanks. Was briefly in coms with Mike before a decision was made. Judy Pay’s team is on minimum crew for now – no joy there. Do have some good leads I’m working on, but more leads always helpful. Cheers.

The parts in the photos are not Vampire. The p/ns you have don’t match anyway. If you have found Vampire parts and are looking for a new home for those, I would be interested in details…
